Afripods Leveraging Broadcast-to-Podcast Technology: The Future of Radio in Africa
In today's rapidly digitizing world, the conventional ways we consume media are evolving. With the rise of podcasting as a favorite medium, Africa is not just catching up, but in some ways, setting the pace. A remarkable example of this trend is the pioneering work done by Afripods with their innovative Broadcast-to-Podcast (B2P) technology.
Afripods: A Revolution in Broadcasting
Afripods, a leader in podcast hosting and distribution in Africa, recently unveiled its B2P technology. After nearly two years of meticulous development, the results are groundbreaking. Radio stations participating in the B2P program experienced a whopping 895% surge in streams within a mere six months.
This success isn't just limited to a single country. Over 110 radio stations spanning eight African nations have adopted the B2P platform, broadcasting content in over ten distinct languages. The uptake of this technology indicates a significant shift in the radio industry – from traditional broadcasting to on-demand radio content.
Understanding the B2P Potential
What makes the Broadcast-to-Podcast model so significant? It taps into the burgeoning podcast audience, which is projected to exceed 504.9 million listeners globally by 2024. Advertisers see the potential, with global podcasting ad revenue anticipated to surpass $3.7 billion in the same timeframe.
Afripods' research reveals an essential fact - 81% of African radio enthusiasts express a keen interest in on-demand radio. Furthermore, 69% of these listeners are already familiar with podcasts. These numbers signify an unmissable opportunity for radio stations to transform their one-off broadcasts into evergreen content. This not only ensures a broader reach and prolonged shelf life for content but also opens up new revenue streams.
The Young and The Restless
One cannot overlook the demographic advantage that sub-Saharan Africa enjoys. With 70% of its population under the age of 30, the region boasts the youngest demographic globally. This energetic and tech-savvy group craves on-demand content, with podcasting squarely in their crosshairs.
Kevin Y. Brown, the Chief Content Officer & Head of Strategy at Afripods, captures this sentiment perfectly. He notes that B2P emerges as the perfect solution for radio stations, enabling them to connect with their audience effectively - both present and future.
Conclusion: The Road Ahead
Afripods’ B2P technology is not just a glimpse into the future of radio broadcasting in Africa; it’s the blueprint for its evolution. As the platform plans its expansion to 15 markets, accommodating up to 20 languages by the end of 2023, the message is clear: the future of radio in Africa is on-demand.
For broadcasters and media houses seeking to expand their reach and revenue, the journey begins with embracing innovations like B2P. In a world where content is king, making it accessible and evergreen is the key to the kingdom.

Reimagining David Copperfield: A New Voice Takes the Lead in New Audible Series
Ncuti Gatwa, best recognized for his stellar performances in Netflix’s “Sex Education” and as the 15th Doctor Who, is set to lend his voice to one of Charles Dickens’ most celebrated characters, David Copperfield. This marks yet another fascinating adaptation in the world of audiobooks, demonstrating the evergreen charm of Dickens’ tales, now retold in a modern format.
Helmed by Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes, previously known for movies such as "American Beauty" and "Skyfall," this isn’t his first rendezvous with Dickens on Audible. He earlier served as the executive producer for "Oliver Twist," which, with its riveting narration and captivating soundscapes, earned accolades last year.
Adding to the ensemble are names such as Helena Bonham Carter of the “Harry Potter” series, Theo James from “The White Lotus,” and “The Hobbit’s” Richard Armitage, among others. As the cast prepares to breathe new life into Dickens' masterpiece, listeners worldwide await a fresh immersive experience, blending classic literature with contemporary performance artistry.
As we mark our calendars for the global release on 30 November, Audible promises that the cinematic sound design, combined with Gatwa's charismatic voice, will transport listeners directly into Dickens’ universe, accentuating every emotion, from David's challenges to his accomplishments.
