Host-read ads remain a powerful way for brands and podcasts to create an intimate connection with their target audiences. But, host-read ads that seem to be a personal endorsement of a podcast host are now coming under the scrutiny of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
In late 2022, the FTC proposed new rules to protect consumers from fake reviews and endorsements. This proposed legislation sets stricter penalties for those who violate the proposed rules changes.
When it comes to podcast advertising, a host-read ad with a personal endorsement implies that the host has used the product or service, Hilary Ross Shafer, VP of the podcasting and YouTube influencer arm of Veritone One, a performance audio agency, explained. A “straight” host read might include discussions of the benefits of the brand but with no implication of personal use, she added. - Alyssa Meyers (MarketingBrew, Truth in podcast advertising? 2023)
Since May of 2022, the Biden administration and the Federal Trade Commission have been diligently working together to strengthen their guidelines against “fake and manipulated reviews” and “stealth-advertising” directed at children.
As a podcaster, it is important that you adhere to these guidelines and properly disclose any relationship with current or potential advertisers to ensure that you are not in violation of any regulations.
By adhering to the current guidelines, you can ensure the safety and security of your listeners, as well as protect yourself from potential infractions.
