Shifting Trends in Podcasting: The Rise of Video and More
Podcasting is entering a new era, and the buzzword for the next chapter is "video," according to a semiannual State of Media & Entertainment report from Morning Consult. The findings reveal an intriguing shift in the podcast industry, with an emphasis on the role of Gen Z in driving this change.
Gen Z and Video Podcasting: A Growing Love Affair
Almost 20% of Gen Z adults said they watched a video podcast daily last month, outpacing those who merely listened to a show. This key statistic indicates a substantial shift in the media consumption habits of this tech-savvy demographic.
What's more, the actual number of video podcast consumers could be higher, given the increasing prevalence of podcast clips on social media platforms. The line between casual browsing and deliberate podcast viewing is increasingly blurred.
Video Podcasting: A Broadening Appeal
However, it's not just Gen Z leading the charge towards video podcasting. The trend is gaining momentum across the spectrum, with 11% of all those surveyed admitting to watching a video podcast daily in May - the same percentage that said they listened to an audio podcast.
A caveat that emerges from the Morning Consult report is that video podcast production, being cost-intensive, may witness more top-performing shows offering video versions while less-known ones stick with audio.
Podcasting: A Balance Between Video and Audio
Despite the shift towards video, the report emphasizes that audio podcasting retains a significant audience. With 70% of Gen Z streaming music in their cars, 60% while at work, and 50% at the gym, these instances underline scenarios where audio has a natural advantage.
Regardless of Gen Z's well-known preference for visual content, notably through platforms like TikTok, many are still heavily consuming audio-only experiences, stressing the ongoing relevance of digital audio ads.
AI and the Streaming Music Platform
The report sheds light on the role of AI in media consumption, with just 13% of adults finding AI-curated playlists a big draw for choosing a streaming music platform. Moreover, approximately a quarter of adults feel that AI's use in TV shows and movies actually detracts from dialogue and plot quality.
The Lure of Big Franchises
Brand franchises are still a big pull for consumers. The data shows that 40% of adults are willing to pay more for a video streaming service that delivers content based on major franchises. This demonstrates an ongoing interest and loyalty to well-established brand narratives.
Podcasting and the Metaverse: A Promising Intersection
The report also hints at a promising intersection between podcasting and the evolving concept of the metaverse, signifying potential synergies for companies looking to build global franchises in this immersive, virtual world.
As we witness this fascinating evolution in the podcasting landscape, driven by video content and the unique consumption habits of Gen Z, it's essential for content creators and marketers to adapt their strategies accordingly. Unraveling the FTC's New Endorsement Guidelines for Podcasters and Radio Personalities
As we reported in the BPA Insider Issue 5, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently updated its guidelines on endorsement ads for the first time since 2009, shedding more light on the roles and responsibilities of radio personalities and podcasters in this context.
The new guidelines aim to ensure greater transparency in the burgeoning age of influencer marketing. They feature an expanded definition of "endorsement", stretching its coverage to encompass fake reviews, tags on social media, and even the increasingly popular virtual influencers. This move is significant, demonstrating the FTC's commitment to keeping pace with the fast-evolving digital media landscape.
Among the essential points addressed in the updated guidelines is the clarity of disclosures. The FTC stresses that disclosures should be "clear and conspicuous". It points out that default platform disclosure features may not be enough to meet this requirement, highlighting the need for endorsers to go the extra mile in clarifying any material relationships.
Audio ads on radio and podcasts are called out specifically in the guidelines. They must be delivered at an easily comprehensible volume, speed, and cadence, making sure ordinary consumers can hear and understand them without any strain. This is an imperative update, considering the growing popularity of audio content in the current media landscape.
Contrary to most rulebooks, the FTC's guidelines don't provide a "do this" and "don't do this" format. Instead, they offer real-world examples that illustrate how endorsement ads may be deceptive or otherwise. A radio personality hinting at regular use of a product based on a single demonstration, for instance, would be viewed as crossing the line.
However, podcasters reading commercials that are obviously advertisements may not need to make additional disclosures. The guidelines assume listeners are savvy enough to understand the context and know that the host likely received compensation for the ad.
The FTC assures that these rules apply across all media channels, both traditional and digital. The essence, they say, lies in whether the audience understands the relationship between the reviewer and the company whose products are being recommended.
While the rules might seem ambiguous, the FTC clarifies that they are not excessively complicated and do not require legal expertise to comprehend or apply. It emphasizes that a simple and honest disclosure like "Company X gave me [this product] to try, and I think it's great" is usually enough to keep consumers well-informed.
In a nutshell, these updated FTC guidelines underscore the importance of transparency and truthfulness in today's media environment. They serve as a reminder for radio personalities, podcasters, and all other influencers that maintaining consumer trust necessitates clear and honest communication about their relationships with the products they endorse.

ThePodcastHost.com publish ‘IndiePod Manifesto’ off the back of independent podcaster census data
🗒️ This is a press release, we have made no changes
Manifesto contains 10 pillars for podcasting success, based on census data obtained directly from 1,200 independent podcasters internationally.
‘Patience to play the long game’ cited as the #1 key to podcasting success
Majority of experienced independent podcasters still not using video (51%), and 32% have no plans to
Solo shows are the most popular format (43%) amongst newbies, but this trend declines sharply the longer a show has been running.
Edinburgh, June 27th 2023 - Podcasting resource website The Podcast Host (thepodcasthost.com) is officially releasing their IndiePod Manifesto today - a document containing 10 pillars for independent podcasting success.
The IndiePod Manifesto is built upon the results of a census of 1,200 independent podcasters from all over the world, surveyed over a period of three months.
As well as containing actionable guidance for independent podcasters, the IndiePod Manifesto is packed with fascinating data that provides unique insight into how podcasters are currently working and what their expectations are for the future.
Amongst these insights is the takeaway that 43% of podcasters agreed that ‘having patience to play the long game’ is the #1 key to podcasting success, followed not-so-closely by good planning (19%) and good equipment (14%).
And while the industry buzz around video podcasting continues, the census suggests not everyone’s convinced. The majority of independent podcasters in the census said they’re not using video at all in their podcast (51%), and 32% said they have no plans to in future either.
Solo shows were revealed to be the most popular podcast format (43%) for independent creators. However, a deep dig into the data revealed that while solo shows are most popular amongst newbies, the trend declines the longer a show has been running. The more episodes a podcast has totted up, the more popular co-hosted shows become, suggesting podcasters adapt their format and bring in an extra pair of hands to ensure they’re producing regular content for their listeners.
It’s no surprise that so many independent creators start out with solo podcasting either. This format allows for a fast iteration cycle in the early days by giving them complete control, fewer logistics and the space to experiment with topics, formats and audience targeting. And once they’ve tested the water alone, they can hone in on what their ideal podcast format looks like.
For full access to the IndiePod Manifesto – which includes all census data insights and visualisations as well as the 10 pillars to podcasting success – visit this page.
Founder of The Podcast Host and Alitu, Colin Gray, has said:
“It’s easy to fall back on educated guesses and predictions in any industry, but the best way to learn is to ask the creators themselves.
We ran this census to hear the experiences and expectations of real independent podcasters (or ‘IndiePodders’!), from as many corners of the industry as possible, so that they could have their say and even play a part in shaping the future of the industry.
By gathering those insights, we were able to craft this IndiePod Manifesto that provides solid, actionable advice based on the collective lived experiences of other podcasters.
And as brands, advertisers, industry experts and technology creators, we can learn a lot from the data, using these insights to better serve the independent podcaster community.
As a company, we’ve worked to support and empower podcasters around the globe, and IndiePodders in particular have always been a huge part of our mission. The IndiePod Census, and the resulting IndiePod Manifesto, are another piece in that puzzle, hoping to make it even easier for anyone to start and run a long-term successful show.”
