Sounder & Urban One: Addressing Systemic Bias in Podcasting And A Path Towards Equitable Monetization for Black Creators
In the rapidly evolving podcasting landscape, Sounder and Urban One are leading the charge in creating a more equitable space for all creators, particularly those from the Black community. Leveraging advanced AI/ML models, these two entities are challenging long-held misconceptions about the scale and potential of Black-owned and targeted audiences.
Urban One, the largest diversified Black-owned media organization in the U.S., reaches an estimated 51 million people monthly. With the significant growth of podcasting, it presents an opportunity to tap into multicultural and diverse markets. Sounder, an industry-leading AI company specializing in podcast content classification, is ensuring that diverse and minority podcasters, often marginalized in the advertising community, are at the forefront of media plans.
A recent study conducted in partnership with Urban One analyzed four distinct podcast cohorts to understand the impact of cultural nuances, transcription accuracy, and potential biases in AI/ML technology on brand safety and suitability risk levels. The study found that cultural nuances in Black creator content, such as unique perspectives, experiences, and vernacular, can lead to misclassifications by AI/ML-based models, causing discomfort for advertisers.
Moreover, the study highlighted the importance of accurate transcription of Black English (AAVE). Incorrect transcription can lead to higher risk assessments than if the words were transcribed correctly. Therefore, it's crucial that Black English is accurately captured within transcriptions to represent and respect the vernacular and culture of the Black community.
Sounder's AI/ML-based brand safety and suitability models are designed to avoid bias and support Black creators and diverse voices. When compared to standard keyword blocklist solutions, semantically and contextually focused AI/ML-based models can make 82% more episodes from Urban One available for monetization. This approach challenges the inaccurate belief that Black-owned and targeted audiences lack the scale for agencies and brands.

Pioneering Civility in Podcasts: Seekr and Oxford Road Launch Groundbreaking AI Tool
Seekr, an innovative AI company, in collaboration with Oxford Road, a leading ad agency, has unveiled a groundbreaking tool, the Civility Score™ for podcasts. This first-of-its-kind tool leverages artificial intelligence to measure brand suitability and affinity in podcast advertising, providing brands with a robust mechanism to shield themselves from high-risk content.
The Civility Score™ gauges the volume and intensity of personal attacks within podcasts, offering a crucial metric for media planning and brand integrity maintenance. By scanning entire podcast episodes, the tool can detect personal attacks at any point, ensuring brands avoid potential pitfalls. Initially focusing on podcasts, the Civility Score™ has plans for expansion across all media forms, marking a significant stride towards addressing societal polarization and promoting civility in media content.
