Spotlight Sunday: Matthew Chapman
Highlighting Black Podcasters & Media Creators in Canada!
“We aim to create a safe space where our guests feel comfortable sharing their vulnerabilities and strategies for overcoming them.”
Featured in Vol.3 of the Northern Voices Podcast List, "Gent's Talk" is a podcast co-hosted with Matthew Chapman. It provides a platform for discussing mental health, business, and relationships, and is known for its engaging format and guest interactions. The podcast has experienced significant growth, including its expansion into the US and reaching impressive episode milestones.
I had the pleasure of meeting Matthew briefly at the 'Soulful Bites' and remember his dashing smile. It was an event by We Media and I at Black Canadian Creators organized to be in a space for content creators to meet in person and connect outside of social media. It’s always a pleasure to meet fellow podcasters in the city.
Having understood the inspirational roots of 'Gent's Talk', it's fascinating to consider the behind-the-scenes. Let's peel back the curtain to see the creative process that brings each episode to life and get to meet and know Matthew.
Behind the Podcast: Matthew Chapman.
Matthew, could you give us a sneak peek into your world with a quick mini-bio? We'd love to read more about the journey that's shaped you!
I'm a self-proclaimed athlete and a lover of all things in the health & wellness space. Gent's Talk is a podcast I co-host where each episode tackles different aspects of navigating today's society as a modern Gent, redefining masculinity and its implications for us, our loved ones, and our dreams and ambitions. We don't shy away from any topic!
What sparked you to get involved with your podcast?
When host Samir Mourani had the chance to interview Russell Peters on video, I was contributing to the men's lifestyle magazine Gent's Post. Samir asked me if I would be interested in transforming the virtual interviews we were already doing into a podcast format.
What's your unique recipe for crafting each episode?
We aim to create a safe space where our guests feel comfortable sharing their vulnerabilities and strategies for overcoming them. We record at Startwell on King St, in Toronto, Ontario, which offers turn-key accessibility. When we arrive at the studio, everything is ready for us.
Looking back at the beginning of your podcast journey, what's one piece of insight which could have made a significant difference for the podcast?
I wish I had understood that all the major podcasts have reached over 200 episodes, showing that it's a journey filled with ups and downs.
What unique strategies do you use to connect with your audience?
I try to respond to as many comments as possible, including the negative ones, to determine if they're valid criticisms or just trolling.
What is in the pod horizons? Any ideas or expansions "Gent's Talk" is working on or excited about?
Our goals include continual growth and expansion into the US market.
Alright, final and fun question for you: If you had to pick a favourite letter from the alphabet, which one would it be and why? 😄🔠
Y. Because why not? (Slaps knee) It's one simple letter, but that lil’ letter can spark such detailed responses from someone.
Love this take on the letter ‘Y’ – it's such a fresh perspective! 😄 For all the curious folks out there eager to connect with you and the show, where they can find and follow you online?
Unfortunately, Matthew is no longer a part of the Gent's Talk podcast. Let's continue to support him as a Black Canadian podcaster and wish him a bright future, whether it's in the podcasting world or any other creative endeavours.
