PRX Triumphs, Shannon Sharpe Scores One, Oprah Scores None At 2024 Black Podcasting Awards
Ice Cold Case, Second Sunday, Stitch Please, and What’s Ray Saying? Lead with Three Wins Each
New York, NY (September 26, 2024) – As the podcasting world gears up for International Podcast Day, Black Podcasting Awards (BPAwards) hosted a Sunday ceremony of big surprises and even bigger victories. This year’s celebration saw a thrilling 32 awards handed out to 19 standout podcasts and 3 leading podcasters. Public Radio Exchange (PRX) emerged as the day’s biggest winner with eight awards: two for Moral Repair: A Black Exploration of Tech, three for its poignant Second Sunday, and three for the engaging What’s Ray Saying?
While Shannon Sharpe fell short with his widely-discussed Club Shay Shay, he didn’t leave empty-handed. With his co-host Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, the duo clinched Best Sports Podcast award for their show Nightcap. In a surprising turn, Oprah was notably absent from the winners’ list, missing out on Best Culture Podcast, Best Limited Series Podcast, and Best Solo Host.
Anna DeShawn’s Queer News maintained its winning streak, claiming Best LGBTQ Podcast for the third consecutive year. Meanwhile, podcasting veteran Lisa Woolfork and her hit show Stitch Please took home three new trophies, bringing her right behind DeShawn’s record for podcast with the most BPAwards wins.
Other winners include Vivan Acquah’s alluring Cooking Back to Our Roots from the Netherlands, the chuckles-inducing Vaguely Nerdy from brother-sister duo Cheryl and Jae Williams, and the captivating TwentyOne 21: A Black AF Scripted Audio Comedy.
In a fitting tribute, Keisha “TK” Dutes, Krystal Hill, and Twila Dang, the three Legend Award recipients, will be honored in person at the upcoming Afros & Audio Podcast Festival in Baltimore, MD, October 18–20, 2024.
In addition to Legend Award winners, VIP Voters decided on some of the night's most prestigious categories, including Best Hosting Duo, Best Solo Host, Best Sound Design, and the coveted Podcaster of the Year title. VIP Voters are BPAwards winners, judges, volunteer staff, nominees, Afros & Audio speakers and staff, and also active Black Podcasters Association members.
The event, now in its fifth year, was hosted by Medium Popcorn's Justin Brown, with Joseph Mambu announcing, and Gifted Sounds Network producing the show. The entire ceremony is available for viewing on BPAwards’ YouTube channel, featuring performances by the sensational TIYI and Veana Marie.
Winners receive physical trophies along with exciting prizes from sponsors including Afros & Audio and Black Podcasters Association.
