Remember the movie Freaky Friday…who would you switch lives with? While you think on that….you called it, it’s time for another Feature Friday!!! 💪🏾
“We need more Black Love. I think we are in a unique position to amplify stories that you wouldn’t hear otherwise”
It isn’t February…but Black History continues (we blackity black black ya’ll ✊🏾) So I have to speak to something special to that experience…. and that is Black Love. You can’t talk about Black Love without acknowledging to the insightful and hilarious Krystal Hill.
Krystal is currently the Director of Podcasts for Black Love Inc. where she launched the Black Love Podcast Network in 2021. Home of 360 degrees of Black Love, the Black Love Podcast Network is home to eight award-winning shows that have amassed over 1.8 million organic listens across its slate. Imma say that again for the ones in the back….1.8 MILLION organic, home grown listens across its slate 🔥! We Love Black Love and Krystals impact and success with that network! Their slate includes a little something for everyone : The Mama’s Den, My New BFF with Codie Elaine Oliver, The Amazing Clarks, SOL Affirmations with Karega and Felic, Black Love Events,, Man to Man: A Black Love Wellness Series, Parenting for the Culture and Black Love: The Interviews.
For Krystal the move into podcasting, just made sense…as she’s taken a path I’ve known all too well. After working in radio on the tech side. opportunity presented itself and she joined the podcasting world. Now I’m sure it’s so much deeper than that, as she alluded on a recent panel about a huge scene she made while quitting a job at Target….I need answers sis?1 What really happened. 😄
No matter what the departure looked like, its no doubt she made a great move and is a game changer and leader in the podcast space.
“It’a important to have an executive role dedicated to amplifying Black voices in the podcasting space.”
Krystal works to push through and amplify those voices that the industry tries to marginalize. At Black Love they work to tell stories that aren’t what you’d expect in the traditional sense but they break barriers. There are stories about love, parenting, grief, and wellness. Krystal shows the importance of why it’s important for US to tell stories for and about US.
And beyond all this a super dope thing about Krystal is not only how she speaks her truth 💯. But also, how she is about community, she’s not afraid to lift up those around her, or as she calls it “non-performative effort”. It isn’t for show, she is just who she is…and thats amazing!
Oh and random…she’s west coast….but yet every time I text her she responds…like i’m east coast isn’t it late/ early for you!? Do you even sleep sis? 😄 She’s just always there ….that’s Krystal.
Though it’s only been 3 years for her in the industry she has so much knowledge to share, what are her tips?
“Podcasting is a long game, you have to be ready to commit at least 2 years to your growth. Bad audio is never a stylistic choice.”
When Krystal tells you the truth you better believe her…. 💅🏾 yup, she said what she said.
With people like Krystal the industry can only grow to be better. As Women’s History Month continues on maybe do as she does.…and pay it forward by finding a gesture to help another podcaster through “non-performative effort” you’ll be all the more better for it.
Keep shining and keep inspiring sis…
Until next time 💕
