Feature Friday: Jasmine Bishop & Charmaine Beasley
Highlighting Our People in Podcasting!
Black History Month continues on ….but so does Feature Friday!✨
“ Black people deserve mental wellness more than anyone- we think this podcast helps bridge that gap. They deserve it in their own language and by people who look like them.”
Listen…I’m already locked in…black mental health is such an important topic and indeed having a safe space is too 💅🏾. Oh yes sign me up. So let’s dive right on in to learn about this week’s feature…Jasmine Bishop & Charmaine Beasley.
Together they host Stay Mentally Dope- a podcast on the intersection of Black culture and mental health. Love that! Charmaine & Jasmine, are two licensed therapists obsessed with Black culture, on the podcast they unpack your favorite throwback movies. They decode why Black parents refuse to apologize. They also help you ditch the struggle love cycle. Whew…now talk about breaking through some barriers 💪🏾. And that’s the thought process behind this podcast…they’re actively working to make mental health digestible and accessible by using our cultural anchors (TV, music movies, etc,).
What a unique take, it isn’t the typical approach for therapy and to incorporate parts of the culture that relate to us all is pretty genius. It makes therapy and talking about our deep selves not so scary. Seems this pod really disarms all those anxieties and cuts through to some pretty dope conversations. I’m here for it and how much they enjoy it as well! ✨
“We love podcasts and felt like it was a good vehicle to doing what we love: talking about black stuff and mental health.”
Okay black girl magic artwork *snap snap* 🫰🏾🫰🏾…now this is dope (see what I did there)
And if you aren’t convinced yet that this is something you should listen to… really think about why our consumption of a pod like this is so important.
I don't know anyone engaging with mental health in the way we do. We also want self-help to be fun and not filled with medical words and no cultural emphasis.
Yes For Us By Us…(hope you get that reference 😅)
Also I have to say that I love that Charmaine & Jasmine are navigating this space together. Kismet, really. They both mentioned to each other that this was something they were interested in and set a time to explore it. Communication, commitment, and collaboration, 3 C’s of podcasting, is what I call it and now they’ve been doing it for two years.
So …as we always ask what did they learn along the way? But…PLOT TWIST I had to ALSO ask about hopes for the future of podcasting:
Have a plan, collaborate with other podcasts, don't be afraid to plug your pod-don't be shy!
We hope it can be more inclusive to Black and Brown communities and that it is given more legitimacy than it currently is.
Yes…as a whole our community can keep building. To be honest the legitimacy is growing. With pods like this the industry will be forced to make a seat at the table for black creators.
In the meantime between time, ya’ll check out this pod so we can all be Mentally Dope together.
Until next week
I’m wishing you
