Her core mission is to amplify marginalized voices. She looks for individuals with powerful, first-hand stories regarding:

SJ: What inspired you to start the Sabi Cruise podcast, and how has it evolved?
Bisola:

I wanted to share more of my fun side, as I've only been talking about financial literacy for years. It has evolved to now having relatable conversations with guests.

SJ: How did you go about launching the show and finding your guests?
Bisola:

Through social media and mostly creator friends.

SJ: What’s something you wish you knew before you started podcasting?
Bisola:

Honestly, one thing I wish I knew from the start is that consistency matters way more than perfection.
At first, I thought I needed the fanciest setup, but the truth is, a decent mic and a steady schedule go a long way.

Another big one for me is batching episodes. Recording a few at once saves me so much stress because life will always get busy.

I also learned that marketing is half the game. You can have the best episode, but if you don’t clip it, repurpose it, and share it on socials, people won’t even know it exists.

And finally, I’ve realized your podcast can evolve with you. Sabi Cruise doesn’t have to stay locked into one format forever—it grows as I do, and that’s part of the fun.

SJ: What’s one memorable listener moment that reminded you why you do this?
Bisola:

A mindset shift happened for one of the listeners and they emailed me with a lovely feedback.

SJ: What’s your take on how podcast tech and editing tools are evolving?
Bisola:

I think it's reshaping the industry in a fun way. Editing is now much easier and helps with staying consistent.

We’re barely in the room at industry conferences.
We’re missing from most podcast studies.
And when those “Top Podcast Leaders” lists drop? Crickets. But that’s another article for another day.

Meanwhile, we’re over here building full shows on fumes—editing on our lunch breaks, teaching ourselves marketing, and showing up for our audiences week after week without the backing or the bag.

So when Roger Nairn (CEO of JAR Audio) dropped an open letter last week calling out the government for ghosting podcasting in Canadian cultural policy? I had to lean in. Because he’s not wrong.

“Yes — the CBC is essential and outstanding. But it can’t be the only public pathway to audio storytelling. And corporate funding can’t be the only alternative. That leaves too many creators out, and too many vital stories untold.

The timing couldn’t be more urgent.
Meta has blocked Canadian news content. U.S. podcasts dominate our charts. And for many Canadians, podcasts are now a key source of trusted news, civic storytelling, and public dialogue.”

Here’s What’s Going On

Canadian podcasting is growing fast. But our government funding?
Nonexistent. Right now, we’ve got:

❌ No podcast fund—not for audio, not for video

❌ No CMF (Canada Media Fund) support for podcast creators

❌ No recognition of podcasts as real labour in cultural policy

❌ No support structure for creators outside of CBC or corporate-backed projects

And let’s keep it real—when funding is available? It rarely reaches us.

If You’re a Black Podcaster in Canada, This Hits Different

You’re probably:

• The host, the editor, the marketer, and the strategist

• Fronting all the costs out of pocket

• Juggling your show with a 9–5, family, or freelance gigs

• Still figuring out how to grow without selling out

• Still no network that represent, hence why “The Chonilla Network” is changing and filling this gap.

And even when you do create something brilliant? There’s no support to scale. No grant to keep your team paid. No network helping your show get discovered.
Just hard work—and exhaustion.

Let’s Talk Numbers

• 12 million Canadians (39%) listen to podcasts monthly

• 22% of BIPOC in Canada listen to podcasts weekly. (More on this at Pod The North SCOOP: The State of Play for Black Canadian Podcasters)

• Francophone listenership grew 65% (2019–2023)

• Global podcast revenue hit $7.3B USD in 2024

• But only 30% of Canada’s Top 30 podcasts are actually Canadian

So no—it’s not about talent. It’s about access. It’s about support. It’s about being seen as part of this country’s cultural infrastructure.

What This Letter Is Asking For

This isn’t just a call-out—it’s a call in.

The letter demands:

1. A dedicated federal podcast fund

2. Updated CMF criteria to include podcasting (audio + video)

3. A national consultation with creators (yes, us)

4. That podcasting be included in labour force surveys, so our work is counted and valued

Because we’re not just hobbyists with a mic.
We’re producers. We’re storytellers. We are culture.

How It Started vs. How It’s Going

Born out of the early days of the pandemic, 3rd Intermission set out to revive the passion for hockey within the Black community—because let’s be real, the sport hasn’t always been the most welcoming. Co-founders Dave, Reese, Darren, and former member Jordan Hayles saw the need for something fresh, something for us. And now, with Executive Producer Avry, Producer Marsha, and team members Jason and Troy, they’re keeping the momentum going.

From covering the ups and downs of the Toronto Maple Leafs (we’ve been through it, fam) to tackling the game’s much-needed push for diversity, this podcast is all about hockey for everyone.

So, it’s been a lot since June 2024. Life was lifing hard, and for those who know me, you know! As I eased back into the normalcy of the every day, I started attending a few content-related conferences. One of them was Content Canada 2024.

Although it was heavily geared towards producers, production companies, and TV networks, what caught my attention was a conversation I had no idea existed: “Digital-First Content: Investing in the Creator Economy.” Did you know about the CMF/FMC Digital Creators Pilot Program (DCPP)? The DCPP is designed to support mid-career Canadian digital content creators making short-form videos exclusively for social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.

This program funded by the Canada Media Fund looks like it has been transformative. At the conference, we heard from several successful CMF-funded creators who are leading the way in the creator economy. Speakers included Mae Belen (Actor & Content Creator), Julie Nolke (Actor, Writer, Content Creator), Shayla Oulette Stonechild (Content Creator, Founder of Matriarch Movement), and Mane Yousuf (Musician, Content Creator, and Creative Director), with Mathieu Chantelois, EVP of Marketing & Public Affairs at CMF, moderating.

As podcasting becomes more visual, evolving into both podcasts and videocasts, this really got my ideas rolling! I’m inspired to present a videocast that could evolve into a series—a concept that goes beyond a talk show to explore unique niches and themes, bringing value with a Canadian twist. I’d especially love to create something impactful for Black Canadian Creators. I don’t know, the brainstorming continues!

As we start the preparation for The Soundwave Summit 2025, I'd like to introduce you to an incredible talent who graciously co-hosted a live podcast of their show back in June 2024 at our inaugural event, bringing together creators making waves in podcasting in Toronto. It was by far the most diverse podcast summit in Canada for independent podcasters. Hillary shared this historic and inaugural moment with us by performing on stage at Moonlight Lounge (TacoTaco) co-hosting her podcast in front of an audience and I believe their first live show, BlackLantic. First, let me tell you a little about their show.

BlackLantic aims to amplify Black voices and share stories about Black Atlantic lives. Their purpose is to connect Black communities across Atlantic Canada, reducing segregation and isolation.

Their goals:

• Contribute to the economic well-being of content creators.

• Reduce hatred, misinformation, stereotypes, and negative biases toward BIPOC through education and engagement.

• Create safe spaces in the Atlantic region.

About Hillary:

Born and raised in New Brunswick though now a Toronto transplant, Hillary LeBlanc works in communications and media. She is passionate about social justice issues ranging from feminism, equality, racial equity, the LGBTQ+ community and the lower-income community. She also co-owns the BlackLantic podcast.

HL: BlackLantic is a social purpose organization focused on providing platforms of perspective towards the diversity of being Black in Atlantic Canada while challenging common stereotypes. We record weekly alternating between topics and guests.

What inspired you to start or be part of the podcast and; how did the concept come up?
HL: My business partner Clinton and I saw a need to amplify Black/Visible Minority voices on the East Coast of Canada after we both independently experienced racism in New Brunswick. We wanted to rectify this while also filling a niche and providing Black media to the community.

Can you share insights into your creative process for producing an episode?
HL: We research guests that we think are inspirational or impactful to the Black Atlantic community while also combing social media, the news, and attending events to bring relevant content to our listeners.

If you’re in Montreal, how are you doing? I was supposed to help with an event there but my friend who lives in the outskirts of the city advised me to stay put in Toronto due to a severe rain warning. I’m glad I listened! Over this weekend especially Saturday, tropical storm Debby hit the area. In just 24 hours, there was an incredible amount of rain, up to 157 millimetres—which was enough to break the city’s highest one-day rain record.

It was a real flood. The emergency workers were overwhelmed with calls—some even used boats for the flood rescues.

Power outages added to the chaos, which is a huge headache for podcasters I’m sure. At its worst, 550,000 people were without power, though Hydro-Québec promised to restore most connections by the end of yesterday. I hope everyone in the city is safe and that your equipment is intact, protected, and insured.

On a brighter note, speaking of Montreal, today’s spotlight shines on a local podcaster who was featured in Vol.1 of the Northern Voices Podcast List.

Peter has been a devoted member of the Black Canadian Creators Hub Facebook group ever since it was founded about 3 to 4 years ago. I value his input, including his posts with his new episodes.

Please, Peter Anthony introduce yourself:

I’m a broadcast veteran with over 40 years of experience, the host of The Stuph File Program, and the creator of the podcast Business Beyond Bizarre. This funny-but-true podcast highlights some of the lesser-known triumphs of human ingenuity, featuring quirky businesses and hobbies. I am also the Podcast Development Collaborator and Delegate Producer at Groupe Fair-Play.

What sparked you to launch/be part of the podcast? How did the concept take shape?
PAH: Business Beyond Bizarre is an offshoot of the online radio show The Stuph File Program, which has been running for nearly 15 years. This podcast takes a humorous approach to highlighting some of the lesser-known triumphs of human ingenuity.

How do you come up with ideas for your episodes and/or find interesting guests?
PAH: It's just the continuation of the process and connections that come with over 40 years of broadcast interviewing history. In Season One, you met unique characters such as the creators of fart spray, Liquid Ass; the founder of the Church of Jediism; the makers of elephant-dung gin; the originator of Goat Yoga; and the creators of Belly Button Beer (made with fermented navel lint!), among others.

Season Two might have outdone itself with guests like the owner of a Lithuanian potato chip company with a flavour that simulates the nether regions of the female anatomy; the operator of Reykjavik’s Icelandic Phallological Museum; and a man who pushed a peanut up a mountain with his nose, to name just a few!

PAH: I have had my home studio for about 20 years. It includes a 14-channel Mackie board, a broadcast-quality Rode mic, proper soundproofing, and recording and editing tools such as Adobe Audition.

Do you have any favourite listener feedback or interactions that stand out?
PAH: The Stuph File Program" has been around for almost 15 years and it was a continuation of a 20-year radio show before it, so the original fan base has been loyal throughout the years. As for "Business Beyond Bizarre" that is newer and a by-product of "The Stuph File Program" so the audience is still growing.

Alright, the final and fun question: What sport do you find silly and have trouble understanding why others enjoy it?
PAH: In the grand scheme of things, there may be sports that I'm not interested in, I don't think that there are sports that are silly in the general sense. As long as people are passionate about participating and/or watching, then more power to the fans or participants.

WAIT! THERE ARE BLACK CANADIANS!?

I'm BACK! I know, it's been a while since my last update. This week, I wanted to share some reflections from the past months. Life has been a whirlwind, both in a the best possible way and challenging way, but i’ll focus on the positive. I've been deep into planning and organizing a major event that I was incredibly passionate about: a podcast summit right here in Toronto.

As I’ve embraced my 40s, I've found a new appreciation for focusing on one big project at a time. This shift in mindset has allowed me to fully commit my energy, time, skills, and soul to success with the Soundwave Summit, a project now close to my heart. Hence why you didn't read from me for a bit. The summit took place on June 6 and was a celebration of the vibrant and diverse podcasting community we have in the city.

The event was divided into two exciting parts. The daytime portion, Soundwave Sessions, featured panels, presentations, and networking opportunities at StartWell. It was a fantastic opportunity for independent podcasters to connect, share ideas, teach and learn from one another. In the evening, we hosted the Soundwave Showcase at Taco Taco, which was a series of live podcast recordings that showcased the talents of our community.

One of the driving forces behind this summit was my desire to provide a platform for podcasters to shine, especially within my network of Black Canadian Creators. Our goal was to create one of the most diverse podcast summits in the city and across Canada. I'm thrilled to say that we succeeded, thanks to the amazing creatives who said yes to participating.

I have to give a big shout-out to my new compadres and co-organizers Amanda from Lead Podcasting and Michael from The Sonar Podcast Network. Plus, I can’t forget to give a big thanks to Kattie Laur for sharing my name and introducing me to these amazing fellow podcast entrepreneurs / people.

So yes, I didn't post last week. While this article was in draft, my head was deep in the trenches, reconnecting with my podcasting roots. Instead of diving back into Season 2 of Black Canadian Creators (which is still in the works), it had to take a bit of a backseat—let me rephrase, a delay—due to an incredible opportunity to team up with some talented indie podcast entrepreneurs. Together, (Lead Podcasting, The Sonar Podcast Network, and The Chonilla Network) we have have built and are thrilled to present our inaugural podcast conference, The Soundwave Summit, happening on June 6, 2024.

The Summit will kick off at StartWell (786 King Street West) with the Soundwave Sessions. We'll dive into discussions on industry trends, community building, diversity, and monetization strategies.

As the sun sets, the Soundwave Showcase will light up Paradise Theatre (1006c Bloor St West) with three live podcast performances from shows like Blacklantic, Squirrel Talk!, and Women of Ill Repute. This unique evening promises great interviews and entertainment galore.

Since joining the podosphere in 2008 (yep, I've been doing this since you had to figure out how to build your own RSS feed), hosting a podcast conference has been a dream of mine. But organizing one and seeing it take shape since Nov-ish-Dec. 2023, and now watching it become a reality, still leaves me in awe. Now, let's see how many of you will join us for the first of what Canada truly needs, starting right here in Toronto.

I've got to tell you about Chidinma. Back in October 2022, we teamed up to bring some awesome Black Canadian podcasters to Philly at the Afros and Audios which is the first multi-day conference for and by Black independent podcast creators and audio professionals. If you didn’t know, now you know! It was Chidinma, Nana aba Duncan from Media Girlfriends, and the hosts from Hustle Over Everything—Alex & Owen and me representing Canada.

Her podcast? It’s something special. It's like this perfect mix of personal stories, big cultural vibes, and super helpful tips that make you feel ready to take on whatever life throws at you. I, Chidinma Azubuike, am an Urban Planner, as well as the Founder and Host of the But What Do I Know? Podcast. With these two paths, I merge my love for Community Building/Development and my passion for writing and facilitating conversations. As a Podcaster, I created the show to be a community where BIPOC individuals can feel affirmed, listen to uplifting conversations not often heard in the mainstream, and receive information and tools to help overcome those life moments that make them say, 'Damn... But What Do I Know?' Currently, I serve as the Founder, Host, and Editor for the podcast content and subject matter. (Whew, I'm wearing A LOT of hats with this podcast... LOL) In addition to this, when I’m not working on city-related projects or podcasting, I love to relax by watching TV shows such as Insecure or Run the World, which follows the lives and journeys of Black women, as well as discovering new R&B and Afrobeats music.

What sparked you to launch/be part of the podcast? How did the concept take shape?
CA: I was inspired to start the 'But What Do I Know?' Podcast in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the bittersweet nature of that year, the events surrounding the pandemic and the heightened discussions about race compelled me to tell myself, 'It's time to begin this podcast and engage in these vital conversations for our community’.

How do you come up with ideas for your episodes and/or find interesting guests?
CA: When coming up with ideas for podcast episodes, I typically brainstorm topics that interest me, compile a list of current events, reflect on conversations I've had with my friends, and create subtopics and questions around these themes. Through this process, I gain a deeper understanding of certain topics and explore their interconnections. As I develop each topic, I also consider its relatability to listeners and its potential usefulness.

What valuable insights do you wish you'd known before getting into creating a podcast like this?
CA: OOF! I wish I had known the amount of work, energy, and learning that it takes to produce and sustain a successful podcast.

Super curious about the tech behind your podcast? The software and gear you rely on for recording!
CA: I record my in-person episodes using an audio interface such as the Scarlett 2i2 or the Focusrite Scarlett Solo. For virtual episodes, I utilize the recording platform Riverside. Additionally, I edit all my episodes using Adobe Audition software.

Do you have any favourite listener feedback or interactions that stand out to you?
CA: One of my favourite podcast episode reviews is noted below from the 'But What Do I Know?' Podcast Episode: 'Humanize Me' Feat. Cristal Hines. A listener said: "I truly enjoyed the candid comments and honest self-acceptance that Cristal emphasized. I've adopted a 'don't dehumanize me' attitude since my breakup with a narcissist. She has confirmed that I am definitely on the right track, not seeking someone else to identify or define me”.

Alright, the final and fun question for you: What sport do you find silly and have trouble understanding why others enjoy them?
CA: American Football - Girl, I have no idea what is going on and when I watch the Superbowl, I'm watching for the halftime show.

Although I have a deep appreciation for content from the United States, that's exactly why I kicked off 'Black Canadian Creators.'
