A podcast introduction is your first opportunity to make a strong impression on listeners. A well-crafted intro can be the difference between a listener sticking around or clicking away.

Why the Introduction Matters

Your introduction is not just filler; it's a critical element that serves multiple purposes. A good intro is going to:

• Grab Attention. An engaging intro captures the listener's interest right from the start. You need to be able to pull them in within the first 10-15 seconds or risk losing a potential listener.

• Set Expectations. Use your intro to provide a brief overview of what the episode will cover. You should do this for each and every episode. Remember, not everyone has heard your back catalog, and people will rarely go back and listen to your intro episode. Let them know what to expect each and every time.

• Build Connection. Use this space to add a personal touch. Something uniquely you. A personal touch in your intro can create a connection with your audience.

Key Elements of a Great Podcast Introduction

So now that you know the purpose of your intro, how do you go about making a good one? Every podcast introduction should have these elements:

• Catchy Hook. Start with a statement, question, or soundbite that grabs attention. Why do people want to listen to your show?

• Show Identity. Clearly state your podcast name and tagline. Let listeners know who you are right off the bat! If you’re show is meant to showcase you as an expert, make sure you’re laying out those credentials you’ve worked so hard for.

• Episode Tease. People rarely read episode descriptions. If your show doesn’t have an easy-to-decipher title, then briefly mention the topic or guest for the episode so listeners know if they want to stick around.

• Call to Action. Don’t wait for the outro! Encourage listeners to subscribe, rate, or visit your website in the intro as well. That’s prime real-estate. Don’t waste it!

I’m finally back with another edition of BPA Learn! I’ll admit that January and February got the best of me. With the merger of Hello Podcast Media into Boundless Audio and the acquisition of WOC Podcasters, it’s been a whirlwind of the past two months! But I’m back today, diving into a game-changing strategy for your podcast production process: batch recording. Not only does this approach streamline your workflow, but it also offers surprising benefits for your mental health and episode planning. What is Batch Recording?

Batch recording is the process of recording multiple episodes of your podcast in one sitting or over a few dedicated sessions. This method contrasts with recording each episode individually, spread over several days or weeks. It's like meal prepping for the week ahead—it saves time, reduces stress, and ensures you're always prepared.

Streamlining Your Workflow

Batch recording transforms your podcasting workflow by allowing you to focus intensely on one task at a time rather than constantly switching gears between planning, recording, and editing. Here's how it can streamline your process:

• Efficiency: With all your recording equipment set up, you save time by knocking out several episodes back-to-back. This cuts down on setup and teardown time, making your recording days more productive.

Synopsis: Being a part of the team that brought forth the first hip-hop-inspired podcast soundtrack in history was one of the most exciting times in my career. After a year away, I can honestly say that, while at the home of Disgraceland, I experienced one of the most exhilarating creative adventures of my professional career. When I think of DE, I think of disrupters, risk-takers, and true pioneers in the podcast space.

Before I delve into our monthly marketing tip, I must also give a shout-out to the writers' room for podcasts ACROSS THE INDUSTRY. Also, kudos to the engineers, sound composers/designers, voice actors, editors, and researchers. There are so many moving pieces silently propelling each show, episode by episode. With all of these quiet contributors, it's up to the host and the marketing team to be as loud and diligent as possible about spreading the good news. The diligence should almost be deafening to your core audience. And if you can get them to “jam out” with you- that’s where you find a “def jam” (okay, enough auntie humor)…but you get where I’m going.

Dear Diary,

When I began my journey into podcast marketing, to be completely honest, I had no idea what to expect. While I understood the nuances of music marketing, diving into the world of podcast marketing presented a learning curve. "We need to move fast and break things," our CEO once told me. Nervous yet determined, I faced our first meeting with Def Jam. Here Comes the Break was set to be groundbreaking, and I was resolute that it shouldn't be the last of its kind.

The show boasted star power with Asante Blackk, fresh off his stellar performance in When They See Us, Daniella Perkins, an established Nickelodeon standout and TikTok sensation, a cast of Boston theater aficionados, and phenomenal writing and directing.

Despite the impressive lineup, there were numerous moving parts: a podcast, a music discovery tool, a message on mental health within the BIPOC community, and a show primarily targeting Gen Z, one of the fastest-growing podcast audiences. Even with these attributes, the challenge remained—how do we position the podcast to entice the right listener without alienating potential super fans?

We needed to do our “due dills.

Another crucial consideration was that, well, Def Jam is Def Jam—so while a podcast is charming, it wasn't going to make or break the legacy of this music mastodon. D.E., positioned at the crossroads of true crime and music with a mansion-sized monopoly, was venturing into its first feel-good, fictionalized audio drama.

Around Episode 5, a realization struck: while my focus was on cross-pollinating the worlds of music and podcasts, this wasn't necessarily the collective goal. Def Jam was there to introduce new music. So, download numbers and streaming numbers, despite originating from the same platform (I won’t name names- but it rhymes with Potisy), weren’t synonymous as favorable KPI’s in both the podcast and music realms. We wanted people to listen to the podcast AND download the music.

We decided, let’s do EVERYTHING! Podcast advertisements, cross-promo swaps, newsletters, app editorials, guest interviews (if Asante or Danielle weren't available, I'd offer a producer, writer, director, artist, background dancer—I’m joking), curated playlists, outdoor advertising, influencer kits, Clubhouse, TikTok, Instagram, and "door-to-door sales" a la the Church of Latter-day Saints (kidding, again). We were doing our “due dills”!

For eight months, all I did was talk about this podcast. With the might of iHeart and the magical efforts of the team at Beck Media (God bless you all), we managed to muster a little over 3,500 downloads a week.

**cue “Lose Yourself” Eminem. Fay sings “Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti!”**

Wait, it’s Def Jam **record scratch** Fay cues Old Kanye “Stronger”.

What was I doing wrong? What had I overlooked? What in the Oprah-Tyler-Perry-Black Illuminati hell was going on? And why are y’all doing this to me in front of all these white people? I needed a big win- a big favor- something that would tip the scale in our favor.  So, I did what I always did, I went “home”.

Who was a big celebrity from South Carolina that could help in podcasts???

CHARLAMAGNE!!!!THA GAAAAWD!!!! ENTER THE CHAT.

**Internal Dialogue** Does he even have the same number? Does he remember me?  I remember him- he was the first radio host to write about my album Southern Belle back in my emcee days-when I was still a student at the College of Charleston- but that was over 15 years ago? I hadn’t seen or spoken to him in person since then. We never crossed paths in NYC.  SO, I was convinced that this would be a dead end, but I texted him anyway with no expectation of a response.  

Not only did he respond, but he also pointed me in the right direction. South Carolinians, especially Gullah Geechee folk, always have this innate tendency to "come home." Hailing from South Carolina and venturing elsewhere in the country or the world comes with an unwritten duty—an allegiance to all other South Carolinians. We share an understanding and know what it means to be Black and from the South, where we naturally feel the need to go twice as hard. This geographical characteristic distinctly differs from being Black and from New York, Chicago, or LA (the caveat would be Atlanta or Miami—while they are both technically located in the south, they are both considered anomalies to this rule).

Southern hospitality is ingrained in us to always '“speak." It was my first time on the receiving end of such a conversation, but I quickly grasped that, although he responded, it was with a very specific intent. What I gleaned from our brief exchange was, "Hey, I'm not too 'Hollywood' to respond to you," but also, "I'm a businessman and a business…man." HEARD YOU!!! My misstep— I needed to go through the proper channels, and iHeart wasn't going to be enough of a push. (About a month later, we did end up getting an ad read from Charlamagne, but I have to shout out Charlene and her team from Def Jam for the assist!!!)

After pouring immense effort, the needle barely budged. Did it feel great to have a podcast ad on a show as big as the Breakfast Club? ABSOLUTELY. And brand wise, it all connected- especially for the artists on the show. (Again, these were not legacy artists, all of the music was from rising talent or indies.) The retweets and reposts were super helpful.

What would’ve been even better was love from our OWN built in podcast audience! In business, it's a well-known fact that customer acquisition is one of the most expensive costs. While we don't typically view podcast listeners as "customers," if we liken podcasts to albums, each label (or network) possesses its own built-in audience. While Charlamagne's co-sign to the Breakfast Club's radio audience was fantastic, we needed Jake to do the same on Disgraceland. This co-sign was crucial because, although the Breakfast Club speaks to hip-hop fans, it doesn't exclusively cater to podcast enthusiasts. We needed a plug in the podcast space where the host would not only cosign but also allow their listeners to hear the show in their feed.

Does that mean that our other tactics didn’t help? Not at all…Spotify, Apple, Rolling Stone, The Guardian, Asante's Instagram shoutouts, Mouse Jones for IG LIVE after-chats, and even a virtual hang with Snoop Dog were so meaningful. But despite those efforts, our numbers were nowhere near the weekly download numbers of Rory and Mal's former colleague (who consistently dominates the Apple Podcast Music Charts).

To this day, the highest played episode of Here Comes the Break clocks in at or around 130,000 downloads and that happened in the Disgraceland feed. (That’s almost 7x the number of average downloads that we received per month- ONE EPISODE- ONE SUPER TRAILER-ONE FEED DROP- ONE DEFINING MOMENT OF DILIGENCE). 

Later, I would learn the proper term for some of these tactics.  I think a lot of our subsequent releases would be that much  more impactful due to a dedicated owned-and-operated rollout for EVERY show (big ups to the powerhouse Kayla Moriarty) and for consistently utilizing the “super trailer tactic” (shout out to Alison Ver Meulen from Wondery).  What I learned was that it doesn’t make sense to be “shout” about your show if you’re only shouting about it to strangers.  Your first target market should always be your existing audience.  Be “loud” at home so that you and your tribe can “shout” the good news together.   

If I don’t share any other journals this year- remember this one tip- your super fans want to see you win and by focusing on owned and operated channels FIRST, you will set up success for the rest of your campaign in the future.  We missed out on so many “retweets”, “in the wild shares” and podcast partnerships by alienating our built in audience from the beginning. (To be fair, did we do a soft feed drops with other shows on D.E., OF COURSE! But those shows weren’t understandably didn’t have the influence as THE SHOW.)

In this particular instance, there was a bit of red tape to navigate. Here Comes the Break (HCTB) was an iHeart show. Despite being on the same network, there were hurdles to overcome. Adding to the complexity, there was no blueprint to follow for this type of podcast—we were literally building the plane as we were flying it.

Def Jam pioneered the idea of using podcasts as a music discovery tool, while we were experimenting with cross-pollinating audio storytelling, music supervision, and a multidimensional I.P. opportunity for creatives. We even developed a community writers workshop program for students in collaboration with a major microphone company to implement HCTB "student pods" nationwide. Unfortunately, the program didn't launch, and we didn't get greenlit for Season 2.

Yet, the lessons learned from working on this show remain invaluable for every marketing endeavor since. For those that were moved by HCTB, we still continue to work, collaborate, and fellowship together till this day. (Thanks for taking a chance.) Also, doing your due diligence internally doesn't guarantee that everyone will magically jump on board and support your project, but it does guarantee that the RIGHT people will ride with you for a long time!

So when you do decide to magical marketing rollout, be sure to do your due diligence within and then work your way out.

Let's face it, relying solely on traditional podcast revenue streams like ads and sponsorships can be a rollercoaster. So, how can you create a more stable financial foundation? The answer lies in expanding your horizons with workshops, courses, and more. Today, we're diving into a topic that's crucial for all of us in the podcasting world: diversifying income.

Broaden Your Horizons Beyond the Mic

As podcasters, our journey doesn’t end at the microphone. Diversifying your income streams is not just about financial stability; it’s about harnessing your unique skills, knowledge, and passion to create a more profound impact. From engaging workshops to comprehensive courses, creative merchandise, and insightful consulting, there are myriad ways to expand your horizons.

Synopsis

Podcast feeds serve as invaluable conduits for cultivating engaged listenership due to their dynamic and personalized nature. Unlike traditional broadcast mediums, podcast feeds empower audiences to curate their content consumption actively. Subscribers receive automatic updates, ensuring they stay seamlessly connected with their favorite shows. This ongoing, direct connection fosters a sense of community and loyalty, as listeners feel part of an exclusive, ever-evolving conversation. With that in mind, just because you end a series; that does not mean you must end your relationship with subscribers, forever.

It is my belief that if a podcast host properly prepares her audience, they may be able to curate; reprise and re-release content well after their show/series has ended. #LeaveNoFeedBehind

Dear Diary,

I absolutely adore immersing myself into podcast interviews. While red carpet soundbites, late-show banter, and deep dives with the likes of Oprah or Iyanla Vanzant hold their own charm (yes, auntie, come “Fix My Life”,  lol); there's something uniquely captivating about podcast interviews that resonates with me a bit more. It's the sense that when the cameras are off, the speakers let down their guard, creating an intimate atmosphere that transcends scripted conversations. In the world of audio, the speaker is less worried about the “4th wall”. 

Recently, I found myself engrossed in an episode of Scam Goddess with Laci Mosley featuring Diallo Riddle. The conversation was so pure, it was almost like the listener was eavesdropping on two close friends.  Their fluid quips and impromptu dialect switches from American to British accents were quite remarkable. I enjoyed every moment.   

I am already a subscribed listener to both Scam Goddess and One Song (Diallo’s podcast). However, if I weren’t a fan, after that interview, I would surely go find his feed and subscribe.  This interview reminded me of a wonderful tactic in marketing as it relates to the podcast feed.  

We all know that guest interviews are probably one of the best (if not THE best way) to promote your podcast. (I say this emphatically as a person with no data, stats OR proof to share with you- and that’s why this is a “diary” and not a scientific journal. LOL.) 

Having a solid guesting strategy is wise for both the host and their guest.  The beauty lies in the mutual cross-pollination of audiences, creating a dynamic synergy that extends beyond the confines of individual shows. This strategic alliance not only broadens your listener base but also deepens the trust your audience places in you. By introducing them to another captivating show, you're not just promoting; you're curating an experience, fostering a community of shared interests and mutual discovery.

With that, I’d like to share a clever tactic employed by There Are No Girls on the Internet host Bridget Todd.  Bridget recently made a guest appearance on the tech centered podcast B the Way Forward hosted by Brenda Darden Wilkerson (President and CEO of AnitaB.org).  Bridget and Brenda had an insightful conversation about AI, surveillance practices, digital agency and reimagining the tech space in a more inclusive future.  The interview originally appeared on September 27 in B the Way Forward’s feed; but then Bridget brilliantly took it a step forward and dropped the episode in her Internet Hate Machine feed on November 1.

My favorite thing about Bridget’s approach is that she set up expectations for her listeners while seamlessly cross-pollinating Brenda’s show into her feed.  The key to a great feed drop is timing and brand alignment. Since TANGOTI was still in season, it may have confused the audience if Bridget dropped the episode there, but since The Internet Hate Machine had finished its last episode in February (and it was then November)- that feed was open and available for content.

Let’s take a look at how Bridget executed this tactic:

TIP #1 CLOSURE IS KEY; BUT SET ANTICIPATION/EXPECTATIONS

You’ll notice that before Bridget executes her feed drop, there is an episode entitled “Internet Hate Machine May Be Over, But the Conversation Continues”. I love when podcasts set the expectation for their feed.  Letting the listener  know your plan allows them to set a realistic estimate for your content. This episode title tells me that although this series has ended, I need to stay subscribed to the Internet Hate Machine feed (even if I follow Bridget’s other shows- TANGOTI, BEEF, etc). I will want to continue to subscribe here, just in case she drops a surprise episode, BTS snippets or reprises past content. In this case, I got a surprise interview by Bridget AND I’ve now learned about a new show!

TIP #2 TEE-UP THE TALK

When you press play on the episode, the first thing we hear is Bridget’s voice.  She gives us a warm welcome and lets us know how she’s missed having some of the conversations presented specifically on IHM. Then she proceeds to  give an explanation about the organization AnitaB.org and their new podcast B the Way Forward, where she was the inaugural guest. We learn a bit about the show and the hosts before Bridget lets us know  that  we get to hear the entire interview in her feed, now!

It’s important to start off a feed drop with the native host’s voice. The listener wants to make sure they're in the right place and a little explanation sets the tone for what’s to come.   

TIP #3 METADATA IS QUEEN

Lastly, Bridget leaves the pod.link for the show and the web address for the organization in the episode Metadata.  I am a huge fan of the 2-click rule.  Anytime I don’t have to remember something or copy paste a title in a search bar- it is almost guaranteed that I will do “the thing” immediately. (The “thing” in this case is:  Click-Click - subscribed! Click-Click- Followed! Done and Done!)

Yes, it’s an extra step to add the hyperlink in the Metadata. But, remember, it’s not that listeners are lazy- we are SPOILED!!!!  Once we no longer had to call the internet, all bets were off for waiting or wondering “what should I do next”.

We want the most access to content with the least  amount of effort. In this example, Bridget has already hyperlinked everything here for us- so  that we can tune into the next episode of B the Way Forward in two clicks.

BONUS TIP: The other thing that Bridget did was grant the original airing 30+ days to shine. What I mean by that is; more than a month elapses before Bridget drops the interview in  her feed- that gives both her listeners and Brenda’s listeners the time to enjoy the streams/downloads on the original feed.  After that time, if someone from Bridget’s audience missed the interview- this is a great way to reprise the content and revisit the conversation. Both feeds have their moment to  maximize downloads.

So, if you have a feed out there that may be retired; remember, you can still engage your subscribers if you’d like. Leave no feed behind!!! Reflect and reshare in your feed, as well.

• Networking: Connect with other podcasters or industry professionals who might be willing to share resources or offer mentorship (like and Women of Color Podcasters).

Underrepresentation in Mainstream Media

It can be hard to gain visibility in a media landscape dominated by mainstream voices. It’s important to see ourselves represented. Here’s how to overcome this challenge:

• Collaborations: Collaborate with established podcasters or influencers who can help amplify your voice (like this collab we did with Todo Wafi!).

• Social Media and SEO: Utilize social media platforms and search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to increase your podcast's visibility.

• Niche Communities: Engage with niche communities that resonate with your podcast's theme or message.

Facing Stereotypes and Prejudices

We frequently have to confront stereotypes and prejudices, which can affect both content creation and audience reception. When it comes to combating this challenge try:

• Authentic Storytelling: Focus on authentic storytelling that breaks stereotypes and offers fresh perspectives.

• Community Support: Build a supportive community of listeners and fellow podcasters who can offer encouragement and constructive feedback.

• Educational Content: Consider creating episodes that educate your audience about diversity and inclusivity.

Difficulty in Monetization

Monetizing a podcast can be particularly challenging for our voices due to smaller initial audiences and less interest from mainstream advertisers. To start monetizing:

• Diverse Revenue Streams: Look into various revenue streams like merchandise, live events, or premium content subscriptions.

• Targeted Advertising: Seek out advertisers whose products or services align with your audience's interests and values.

Creating content that is culturally sensitive while also appealing to a broader audience can be a tricky balancing act. Remember not everything has to be for everyone but if you want to broaden your appeal try:

Thorough research ensures that the conversation is both engaging and insightful. Make sure that you’re using a solid recording platform like Zencaster or RiversideFM which work well with recording multiple people. If you promote episodes before they drop, hype up your upcoming guest on social media or other platforms where you show up to create that anticipation and draw in listeners.

Amplifying Impact Post-Appearance

After the episode, actively share the content and encourage your guest to do the same. If you can, create graphics for them to easily share and include suggested captions. This mutual promotion helps to amplify reach and draw in more listeners. Engaging with your audience post-episode on social media or podcast forums can strengthen the connection with both existing and new listeners. Ask your guest for feedback. How was their recording experience? What did they think of the episode? Maintaining communication with your guest can pave the way for future collaborations.

In order to see the impact of guests (or guesting on other shows) you need to track the metrics. Look at listener metrics, such as changes in listener numbers and engagement before and after the appearances. Podcasting is one of the most influential mediums for storytelling, education, and connection. Scripting plays an indispensable role when it comes to telling stories that listeners want to hear. I personally don’t fully script out any of my shows, but I do have a basic “run of the show” that is exactly the same every episode. Through powerful scripting techniques, not only can you capture your audience's attention, but you can also ensure your message resonates deeply and authentically.

Why Scripting is Your Superpower

Scripting isn't about constraining your voice—it's about refining it. A well-scripted podcast can help provide clarity, boost confidence, and ensure consistency. Scripting can help you organize your thoughts and ensure that the core message of your episode isn’t lost. For my Herstoryically podcast, I have a script that I use to tell a historical woman’s story - early life, career/mid-life, death, and legacy. This helps me make sure I’m not missing any of the story. Scripting also helps boost confidence because you know the path your story is going to take, which helps you deliver it with confidence. And we all know that a good podcast is consistent. For series or episodes, scripting helps maintain a consistent voice and tone.

Scripting Techniques

There are a few tried and true techniques when it comes to scripting your show. First and foremost, never sound like you’re reading! Even if your script is a word-for-word run down of your episode, make sure you use tones and inflections while you’re recording.

Embrace what makes you, you. Your unique experiences and perspectives are your strength. Use real-life stories, incidents, or personal reflections to create relatable content where appropriate.

Engage your audience with interactive elements such as Q&A segments, listener feedback, or even short skits. This not only makes your podcast dynamic but also creates a community feel.

Lastly, whenever possible, involve diverse voices in your scripting process. This enhances the richness of your content and brings varied perspectives to the forefront.

Tailored Approaches for the Diverse Podcaster

The good thing about us Black and brown folks is that we have a wide range of experiences. Depending on your show, use that to build an immersive experience for your listeners. Weave in historical references or tales from the past that resonate with the present. It provides depth and context. Highlight cultural traditions, languages, or rituals that bring out the essence of your community. It creates an educational and bonding experience. And for those with more editing prowess than I have, integrate culturally relevant music or sounds to elevate the mood and immerse the listener.

Editing and SEO-Optimization

Even the most meticulously scripted podcast can benefit from a final review. If you don’t already, make sure you’re editing for:

1. Flow and Continuity: Ensure that your script maintains a natural rhythm from start to finish.

2. Precision: Trim out redundant parts, ensuring the core message remains crisp and clear.

3. Feedback Loop: Before the final recording, have a trusted colleague or mentor review your script. Fresh eyes can offer invaluable insights.

SEO optimization can also help make all the scripting work get heard! Identify keywords that are relevant to your topic and integrate them naturally. Use platforms like Google Keyword Planner to help. Make sure that your episode titles and descriptions are not only captivating but keyword-rich. This is your show’s first impression. Many hosting platforms are not offering AI features that can help write titles and descriptions that are SEO optimized. Lastly, don’t leave anyone out, and always offer transcripts. Not only does a transcript make your podcast accessible, but it’s also an SEO goldmine. Tools like "Otter.ai" or your host’s AI tools can assist with transcription as well.

Make sure your podcast not only stands out but also leaves a mark on the listener's heart and mind. Scripting, when done right, isn't a chore— a well-crafted script is the bridge between your voice and a captivated audience.

Synopsis: Audio marketing, as it relates to podcasting, has become an exciting playground for creators and marketers alike. The podcasting landscape is diverse and offers a multitude of opportunities for those who are willing to experiment and explore various strategies. However, when it comes to promoting your podcast and achieving growth, the age-old question persists: What's the best approach? Is content marketing superior to social media marketing, or is it the other way around? The truth is, there is no one-size-fits-all answer, and each method has its own unique advantages and challenges. 

Audio marketing can be such a beautiful experiment.  Each time that I work with a client, I am approached with so many theories, a multitude of options and a myriad of possibilities.  I can never definitively say that one way works better than another to facilitate growth in the audio space. However, I can say there is no ONE “right way” to do “the thing”. (“The thing” being the desired goal and “right way” being the proven “surefire” tactic.)  

In this diary entry, I want to explore the dichotomy of content marketing and the intersection of social media marketing for podcasters. 

Dear Diary,

I loathe social media. (There, I said it outloud.) But social media, like all systems of power, have one thing in common- you don’t have to like it, but you must respect it! Social Media is a powerful and, at times, controversial tool. For many, including myself, there's a love-hate relationship with it. On one hand, social media has given a voice to people from all walks of life, allowing them to share their thoughts, opinions, and expertise with a global audience. On the other hand, it can be a source of misinformation and an echo chamber for stereotypes and a poorly represented loud majority. 

However, I have benefited from the perception of social media just as much as anyone else; so I cannot disregard the very valuable tool that has grown from AOL chat rooms to full grown applications/mini-cults.

This paradox has implications for podcasters, as social media can both help and hinder their efforts. It's a valuable platform for self-promotion and audience engagement, but it can also be a noisy and distracting space where valuable content can get lost in the shuffle. When it comes to podcast marketing, one of the most common questions from creators is how to approach social media promotion.  

FIRST and FOREMOST (I’m saying this “with my chest”) social media is just ONE small piece of the marketing puzzle.  I recommend starting with the “not so fun stuff”:  SEO, SMO, Cross Promos, Newsletters, Feed Drops, Interview Swaps, a strong publicity campaign and even some paid ads (if you have a little extra in the budget). But for the sake of FUN, let’s use this first diary to focus on Content Marketing for Social Media.

Social media users are often seeking authentic connections, valuable content, and engaging experiences rather than being bombarded with promotional material. The essence of social media marketing is to build relationships and engage with your audience, not to aggressively sell your podcast. By following the 4:1 rule (four posts for your audience for every one post about your podcast), you strike a balance between providing value and promoting your content.

TIP #1  Enticing Your Existing Fans

Content marketing within social media is about captivating your existing audience and enticing them to listen to your new episodes immediately. The first 24-72 hours after releasing an episode are crucial to boosting downloads. Content marketing primarily targets your existing fanbase, so don't expect to miraculously grow your podcast's listener fanbase from a few posts on any one social media platform. There are other strategies for attracting new-NON-podcast-listeners (THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM).

For your current audience, however, share content that encourages them to engage, share, and anticipate your latest episode or season highlight in their preferred podcast app. The more listens you accumulate during that initial 72-hour window, the more likely your episode will capture the attention of podcast app editors and curators, potentially leading to better placement within the platform.

TIP #2 Share THE Tantalizing Sizzle

Maaaad savvy sizzles are KEY!  One powerful content marketing tactic is sharing a “tantalizing sizzle” –a video highlight clip, teaser or outtake from your episode.  While audiograms are somewhat effective (s/o Headliner), talking head videos are currently in vogue and can be an excellent way to engage your audience.  (This does NOT mean go start a VIDEO PODCAST, VLODCAST OR VOD- what are the kids calling this? Lol. I like to call them what they are…YouTube videos and Twitch Streams.)  Programs such as Riverside make it really easy to grab the clip you want and do a quick edit to drop fun clips in your social media feed for your mavens and superfans to share.  

This piece of content should pique your audience's interest and add value to your episode. You can go for juicy gossip, behind-the-scenes insights, or some spicy clickbait that's relevant to current trending topics in the blogospheres. Whatever you decide to share, it should ADVANCE the episode.

Lastly, it’s great to have 3-4 of these in the pocket. One before the episode, one when the episode is live, another to drive back to the episode and (as a bonus) one for a thematic point later in the year that can be used in perpetuity.  

TIP #3 An example from Jazzie Belle!!!

Don’t take my word for it, here are a few examples from a MAD SAVVY content marketer and podcast host Jazzie Belle from Women in Hip Hop (REVOLT).

Example 1: The Thematic Post

(In this example, Jazzie Belle lifts a clip  of her guest Drew Dixon telling a fun Whitney Houston memory. Jazzie gets extra credit for dropping this clip  ON Whitney Houston’s birthday.  This is important because not only was Whitney Houston already trending; but Drew Dixon was trending  as  well during Hip Hop 50th conversations in August, and the reprise of her HBO Documentary.)

Example #2: The Newsworthy Clip with a Cliffhanger

(In this example, Jazzie is joined by investigative journalist Dometi Pongo to discuss a very controversial moment in pop culture that was already trending on social media. The clip that she chose was at the moment where they began to disagree on the topic. Jazzie allows the viewer to hear both sides, but she cuts the clip before we can hear the full resolution.)

Conclusively, content marketing is particularly effective for engaging your existing fanbase and seasoned podcast listeners.   The key to the content is offering something that amplifies a big moment in the episode, provides BTS/top secret additional information or presents a bonus element (or deep dive) into the conversation.  You want to leave the viewer enticed, interested and/or wanting more  (This moment should inform, entertain, or educate your audience.)

The other thing to remember is that this content may or may not directly promote your podcast. The goal is to build a strong and loyal audience base by consistently delivering content that aligns with their interests and needs. (The Whitney Houston birthday shout out that Jazzie shared was not from an episode that was doing a deep dive on Whitney Houston. However, her audience would recognize that Jazzie wanted to celebrate Whitney- and that makes them value her opinion and trust her more because she celebrates women musicians whom they also wish to celebrate.)

TIP #4 WAIT…BEFORE YOU GO…

I’ve known Jazzie for some time and she is truly a pioneer in the audio space.  She highlights the lesser known stories of women within hip hop culture (and their contributions); while also amplifying the legends and icons of today and yesteryear in the same joyous “OOOO-OOOOO” breath.

• Ethnic & Racial Diversity: Ensure your content addresses topics that resonate with listeners from different ethnicities and races. When I talk about things I experience as a Latina, I preface that I’m Puerto Rican, which is a unique and different experience from other Latinx people. Even within racial and ethnic groups, differences can resonate with different listeners.

• Gender & Sexual Orientation: The stories of women, LGBTQ+, and other non-binary folks need amplification.

• Socioeconomic & Geographical Diversity: Discuss issues that resonate with people from various socioeconomic backgrounds and geographic locations.

Use podcast analytics tools to understand your current listener base. Who are they? Where are they from? What are their preferences?

2. Collaborate with Diverse Creators

By working with podcasters from different backgrounds, you amplify their voices and introduce their audiences to your content.

3. Introduce Culturally Relevant Topics

Cultural touchpoints are bridges to diversified audiences. They create a sense of belonging, ensuring listeners from various backgrounds feel seen and heard.

4. Engage in Community Outreach

Interact with communities that you aim to reach. Join online forums, attend events, or simply make your podcast available on platforms they frequent.

5. Seek Feedback & Continuously Evolve

Encourage feedback from your listeners. Understand their needs, and be ready to tweak your content accordingly.

I’m so excited to be writing here on BlkPodNews! Before I jump into today’s topic, let me start by introducing myself and what I’ll be sharing here. The Path to Gaining a New Podcast Subscriber: Decoding the 7 Crucial Steps

Attracting new subscribers tends to be one of the primary goals of any podcaster. But ya’ll know that there are literally thousands of podcasts already, in both audio and video formats, which means ensuring that potential listeners choose your podcast over the plethora of others can be a challenging task. It's a journey, with every step presenting a crucial decision point or, as I like to call them, "fork in the road decisions."

Understanding these decision points and optimizing them can significantly enhance your ability to turn a casual browser into a loyal podcast listener.

1. First Impressions: The Power of Cover Art and Show Title

Clue they're seeking: Is this podcast worth my time?

Before a potential listener dives into your content, the first thing they'll encounter is your podcast's title and cover art. This is their first impression of your brand, and you want it to resonate. A catchy title and a professionally designed cover can grab attention and set the tone for what's to come.

2. Delving Deeper: The Show Description

Clue they're seeking: What is this podcast about?

Once your title and cover art have piqued their interest, the next step for a potential listener is to understand what your podcast offers. An engaging and concise show description can make the difference between a click-through and an off-ramp. Be sure to clearly outline who the podcast is for and how it'll add value to the listener's life.

3. Episode Titles: The Snapshot of Your Content

Clue they're seeking: Do these topics interest me?

Just as a book is judged by its chapters, your podcast will be judged by its episode titles. Don’t try and make titles clever or random. While titles should be catchy, they also need to give a clear idea of the content and its relevance to the potential subscriber.

4. A Closer Look: The Episode Description

Clue they're seeking: Is this episode worth my time?

A comprehensive episode description can seal the deal. This is where you can showcase the depth, quality, and relevance of your content. Make sure it's clear, engaging, and resonates with the specific audience you're targeting. I’ve seen episode descriptions that tell me literally nothing about the episode and the title doesn’t either. Listeners will rarely listen to a show if they don’t know what they’re getting into.

5. The Audio Teaser: First 3 Minutes of Your Episode

Clue they're seeking: Is the audio quality up to par? Does it engage me right away?

The first few minutes of your episode act as a teaser. If you can't captivate the listener in this short time, they're likely to drop off. Ensure top-notch audio quality and dive straight into compelling content.

6. Commitment: Listening Through to the End

Clue they're seeking: Is the entire episode valuable and engaging?

If a listener commits to the entire episode, you're on the right track. This shows they see value in your content. Consistency in quality and content relevance throughout the episode is key to retaining them till the end.

7. The Ultimate Goal: Subscribing to the Show

Clue they're seeking: Do I see consistent value in this podcast?

If a potential podcast listener has reached this point, you've almost won them over. A subscribe action signifies their trust in your content's consistent value. Aim to exceed their expectations to ensure they hit that subscribe button.

Fork in the Road: Why Listeners Might Turn Away

Every one of these steps gives a potential listener that fork in the road decision where they might decide the podcast isn't for them. Most commonly, they:

• Don't perceive the show as valuable;

• Question the show's quality; and/or

• Don't see it as a fit for them.

If you work to ensure that every touchpoint is optimized to cater to your target audience, you can minimize these fork-in-the-road decision checkpoints and maximize new listeners.

Standing out and ensuring that your potential podcast subscriber perceives your content as valuable, of high quality, and relevant to them is the game-changer. Trademark protection is essential for BIPOC podcasts for several reasons:

1. Safeguarding the integrity and culture of BIPOC creators: Trademark protection helps BIPOC creators protect their podcasts' brand and identity from being exploited or misused by others. It ensures that the culture and identity that BIPOC creators have incorporated into their podcasts remain authentic and true to their values, and that they are not co-opted by others for their own benefit.

2. Protecting the intellectual property of BIPOC creators: BIPOC creators often incorporate unique perspectives and original ideas into their podcasts, which can be stolen or misappropriated by others without proper protection. Trademark protection helps ensure that BIPOC creators can protect their intellectual property and prevent others from using their content without permission or compensation.

3. Building and maintaining a strong podcast brand: A strong brand is essential for a successful podcast, and trademark protection plays a critical role in building and maintaining that brand. By protecting your podcast's name, logo, and other identifying features, BIPOC creators can establish themselves as distinct and credible voices in their respective fields, attracting listeners, sponsors, and other collaborators who recognize the value of their unique perspective and culture.

Steps to Protect Your Podcast's Trademark:

1. Start With The Name: As a BIPOC creator, it's important to choose a name for your podcast that resonates with your intended audience. This can help you establish a unique identity and differentiate yourself from other podcasts in the industry. This will be key in protecting and maintaining your trademark rights down the road. 

2. Conduct a Thorough Trademark Search: Before starting your podcast (or applying for federal trademark registration), it's essential to conduct a comprehensive trademark search to ensure that your proposed podcast name or logo is not already in use or registered by someone else. This can help you avoid potential legal issues down the line. A basic search can be done through the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) website. It’s best to work with a trademark attorney for a more thorough search.

3. Register Your Trademark: Once you’ve completed your trademark search and confirmed that your podcast name or logo is available, you can apply for trademark protection through the USPTO. The application process can be complex, so it's advisable to work with a trademark attorney to make sure that your application is properly prepared, submitted, and that you have someone on your side to communicate with the USPTO on your behalf should issues arise. 

4. Use Your Trademark Consistently: To maintain trademark protection of your podcast name or logo, it's important to use your trademark consistently in all of your podcast marketing materials, including your website, social media, and other promotional materials. Consistent use of your trademark will also help to establish and maintain your brand identity. 

5. Monitor Your Trademark: Regularly monitor your podcast name and branding to make sure that no one else is using them without permission. I’m sure it goes without saying, but the USPTO will not monitor your trademark for you. Basic monitoring can be done through regular internet searches and monitoring social media platforms. However, as busy as you are with your podcast and doing all of the things, have an attorney take this off your plate and monitor it for you. Not only can they use a more robust monitoring system, when copycats arise, but they’ll also be able to give you an immediate plan of action so that your podcast and your brand stay protected. 

6. Enforce Your Trademark Rights: If you discover that someone else is using your podcast name or branding without permission, it's important to take legal action to enforce and maintain your trademark rights. This can be done through cease-and-desist letters, filing a lawsuit, or other means. It could be less formal and as simple as having your trademark attorney make a phone call or send an email on your behalf. Whatever means you choose, the most important thing is that you take action. Inaction can cause you to lose your trademark rights.
