There’s something special about being at a gathering full of people with a shared interest. It’s both a feeling of belonging and excitement for more. So when I saw the fourth annual Black Effect Podcast Festival was returning to Atlanta, I decided to come be a part of this unique celebration.

Charlamagne tha God and iHeartMedia brought together the Culture’s most powerful voices in podcasting, but what struck me wasn’t just the star power. It was how accessible everyone felt. I watched Sheryl Underwood having deep conversations with attendees, hosts and personalities took pictures with fans after their sets. You really could feel like you were a part of a community.

To understand what goes into creating this experience, I sat down with Dollie S Bishop, President of Black Effect, on the “The Future of Media” podcast (listen here).

Building The Festival

“It really takes a dream and a vision and a team to create the experience that we do,” Dollie told me. What’s remarkable? They’ve pulled this off four times in a row while the network itself launched in September 2020.

When I asked about hosting in Atlanta every year, her answer revealed the festival’s deeper purpose: “We want to be where the culture is. And everybody knows that’s Atlanta.”

That intentionality shows everywhere. The Pullman Yards venue is indoor/outdoor, specifically so that the unpredictable Atlanta weather can’t derail the experience. Even when it drizzled during the festival, the conversations and the vibes kept flowing.

The Real Path to That Stage.

Walking around, I heard countless creators saying, “I’m gonna be on that stage next year.” Dollie’s advice was both encouraging and realistic: “Consistency, persistence, and really having something that feels intentional and passionate. Not chasing trends - whatever feels right to your soul.”

Some of last year’s dreamers actually made this year’s lineup, which featured live tapings from “The Don’t Call Me White Girl Show,” “Club 520 Podcast,” “Grits and Eggs Podcast,” “Reality With The King,” and “Drink Champs,” plus panels on AI and media’s future.

The Future Of Podcasting

Dollie’s excitement about podcasting’s future was infectious: “You never know what new star will be born from this medium. It’s exciting to see new people make their own way and do it on their own terms.”

After spending a weekend surrounded by everyone from established voices to emerging creators all sharing the same space, I couldn’t agree more.

This past weekend (October 25th-26th) a group of us ascended on to Richmond. For what? You may be asking…well for the Resonate Podcast Festival. Resonate is a podcast festival created by Chioke I'Anson and Kelly Jones. Resonate Podcast Festival is the place where producers meet their peers and newcomers meet their heroes. Over two days at the Institute for Contemporary Art in Richmond, VA, attendees are treated to workshops from skilled producers, a special live performance, and the opportunity to get private pitch feedback from industry veterans. Between sessions, we got to enjoy snacks, visit the cafe, see the art exhibitions, and converse with people who love podcasts. (source resonatepodfest.com)

I gotta tell you this was my first time at Resonate and I hadn’t heard of it til last year. So I didn’t know what to expect. All I was told was it was a great place for creatives. I was interested because the way those tickets sold out…I knew there had to be something! So I didn’t want to do another year with FOMO! I had to see what was it all about. Well, I gotta tell ya… Resonate most certainly delivered! Other pod fests I’ve attended have been more industry based, and big brand / businesses lead but this one seemed to be very innovative, creatively and production / editorially lead. It was a space of conceptualizing and sharing ideas around content and creation. It really got your mind really flowing!

The sessions were refreshing and ranged from speakers like Nichole Hill, creator of the podcasts The Secret Adventures of Black People and the upcoming series Our Ancestors Were Messy. Her session Fabulously Real broke down the steps in her approach to content creation.

From learning about getting that Schmonneeeyyyy with one of our faves Juleyka Lantigua, founder of LWC Studios; to hearing the stories that truly touched your heart. Those of story telling from Ronald Young Jr ‘s emotional story telling on the loss of his mother to those in journalism. We heard direct reporting from Africa with Lesedi Mogoatlhe and Dhashen Moodley from radio workshop. They shared powerful accounts reporting on LGBTQ+ issues in Uganda. These sessions truly resonated with you…see what I did there! 😅

And ya see that’s the thing that made this festival unique to me, was everyone wanted to know everyone. Everyone wanted to share ideas and solutions, and their was such a big emphasis on collaborating and story telling. And these were enriching stories that pulled you in. Like the amazing story sharing with Dr.Ray Christian ! And I gotta tell ya, it was such smart decision to have him there, at a festival like this! He had all of our attention locked in!

This festival was literally for everyone, full of accomplished, novice, and those seeking to learn, create and produce in the story telling space!

Oh and those snacks 😚 I know I sound crazy but when ya arrive somewhere and haven’t had a chance to eat they certainly come in a clutch. Those crepes had quite a few people in a choke hold—you know who you are! 🤣🤣

By far the biggest take away…and challenge I’d like to put out there to you, would be there pitch competition. The Resonate Pitch Party brought together 3 finalist to share their pods and give a resounding pitch that would earn them a cool 10k. I enjoyed it…and I implore us all next year to take the opportunity to apply cause you never know…the next winner might be you!

Also, the winner was announced by Lupita Nyong'o, so that was an added bonus!

I can go on and on about how amazing this festival was, and it was good to see our pod people from our community. Though we all agree we’d like to see more of us there. I know I would love to go again and find my people cause we just had to do a group photo! I truly enjoyed meeting more people in this awesome community and also kicking it with my “PodSquad”!

Also…I gotta say after the networking, the parties, the sessions….hanging in Richmond was actually a lot of fun. I didn’t expect the food to be so good!…Every place I went to didn’t miss!

So…hopefully I’ll see ya next year?!

So full disclosure, my inspiration for doing my first column for BlkPodNews.com is a bit selfish because the limited run or limited series style of podcast is easily my favorite, even though I primarily work on unscripted conversational podcasts that are ongoing.

Hi, my name is Josh and I’m the owner and operator of Brooklyn Podcasting Studio and a podcast consultant.

Some of you may have met me at this year's BPA Summer Social 2024 (which was a great time) or maybe even been to my studio. I usually don’t break the 4th wall like this but it feels rude to just start talking without any kind of introduction.

Now that we got that out of the way let’s chat about why limited-run podcasts are so tricky to market.

1. Limited Time for Growth

Unlike ongoing podcasts, which have the luxury of building an audience over time, limited run podcasts have a fixed number of episodes. This means there’s only a small window to attract listeners before the show wraps up. It’s like trying to make a big splash in a short period.

2. No New Content to Keep Listeners Engaged

Ongoing podcasts can keep listeners coming back with fresh content every week, giving plenty of chances for discovery. But once a limited series is over, there’s no more new content to keep people excited and sharing.

3. Less Time to Build a Community

Podcasts thrive on community engagement, but with a limited run show, there’s less time for listeners to feel a deep connection. The short nature of the show can make it harder to foster loyal fans who spread the word.

But, despite these hurdles, there are plenty of ways to make sure your limited run podcast gets noticed and stays relevant.

Pre-Launch Marketing Tactics

Because you’re trying to make as big of a splash as possible within a limited time frame, what you do pre-launch to market your pod is vital. Here’s a few things you can do.

1. Create Buzz with Teasers and Trailers

This one’s obvious and is practically a must do if you’re doing a limited run podcast. A well-produced trailer can hook potential listeners by giving them a taste of what’s to come, whether it's a gripping story, unique insights, or an intriguing concept. Share these widely on social media, podcast platforms, and other podcasts in your niche.

2. Build an Email List

If anyone here is already familiar with my pod tips, you know I’m big on email lists. Start putting together a list of interested listeners before launch. You can offer something special for signing up, like behind-the-scenes content or early episode access. And an email list gives you an additional tool for engagement with your audience that’s direct and builds anticipation.

3. Cross-Promote with Other Podcasters

Find podcasts in a similar niche and swap shoutouts or trailers. This can get your show in front of the right audience quickly. You can also appear as a guest on other shows to talk about your podcast and attract their listeners.

4. Pitch to Press and Podcast Reviewers

Get your podcast in front of the media. Limited run shows often have a focused, compelling narrative, which can be a great angle for media outlets. Reach out to journalists and bloggers who cover podcasts and ask/pitch them for reviews or interviews.

Post-Release Marketing Tactics

This is the area that most independent podcasters doing limited run pods tend to neglect/overlook. Just because all the episodes are out doesn’t mean you're done marketing.

1. Use SEO to Keep Your Show Discoverable

Even after your podcast wraps, people can still discover it if it’s optimized for search engines. Make sure your show notes and episode descriptions use keywords that match what potential listeners might search for.

2. Create Bonus Content

Just because the main episodes are done doesn’t mean you can’t continue the conversation. Consider releasing behind-the-scenes material, interviews, or commentary/follow-up episodes or shorter form social media content to keep people engaged.

3. Repurpose the Podcast in Other Formats

Adapt your podcast into other formats, like blog posts, videos, or even an e-book. This can help you reach a new audience and breathe new life into your content. 

4. Submit to Awards

Limited series podcasts are often great candidates for awards, especially if they have a strong narrative or investigative focus. Winning or being nominated for an award can give your podcast a second wind and attract more listeners.

Final Thoughts

Lastly, I think black audiences as a whole still aren’t aware that these types of pods even exist,  how great they can be, and the many black creators creating pods in this style.

Marketing a limited run podcast as an independent requires creative thinking and lots of effort but with the right strategies, they can garner big attention and have a strong and lasting impact long after they’ve been released.

Ray Daniels may have unlocked the cheat code for creating unforgettable in-person podcast experiences. Game From the Gauds, inspired by Ray’s podcast The Gauds Show, delivered a live, interactive event that went beyond just the music industry, offering game for any creative on the professional journey. Co-hosted by Ray Daniels, Damien Ritter, and Nyla Symone, the night was a masterclass not just for musicians but for creatives of all kinds.

The evening kicked off with Ray asking the crowd to describe where they were in their journey in one word. Responses filled the room with positivity, setting a motivational tone that lasted throughout the night. After the initial introductions, Ray threw in a surprise: artists in the room could earn a chance to perform simply by sending him an Instagram DM with why they should take the stage.

Before diving into the first activity, Ray scanned the crowd to see who had the "look" of an artist, pointing out a few standout individuals. The exercise sparked a larger realization—many more in the room identified themselves as artists. Ray’s statement, "If you don’t look like an artist, you may need to change your look. Artists stand out," struck a chord. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of presence and perception in creative industries.

One of the standout moments of the night came when Ray invited participants to engage in a live networking challenge—essentially, a roleplay to see who could successfully get his phone number. This was more than just a fun exercise; it was an impromptu lesson in effective communication and self-promotion. After each attempt, Ray offered feedback on what worked and what didn’t.

Damien Ritter chimed in with his own advice, explaining that planting a memorable seed—without directly asking for contact information—can be just as effective. This resonated with me personally, as it’s a tactic I’ve found success with over the years by always showing up as my full, authentic self.

The night truly lived up to its name.

Every activity carried a lesson, a takeaway that could help creatives at any stage of their careers. One of the most valuable segments was the social media feedback session, where attendees shared their Instagram pages and received live feedback from the hosts. Ray encouraged everyone to identify their three "content pillars," offering practical advice on creating focused, intentional content.

While some creatives shy away from being put into a box, Ray flipped that perspective by saying, “Put yourself in a box.” It was a shift in thinking—rather than resisting categorization, embrace it and let it guide your content strategy.

Another standout moment was when Ray asked the crowd if they considered themselves influencers. After a mix of responses, he pointed out that while influencers sell themselves, artists often focus on selling their music. He challenged everyone in the room to embrace the idea of being an influencer in their own right. It was a fresh perspective on how artists and creatives can market themselves in today’s digital age.

Throughout the night, Ray dropped countless gems, from "Artist development is in front of the camera, not behind it" to "Drop everything—let people cover your demos." There were too many to write down, and at a certain point, I just absorbed it all, appreciating the wisdom in the moment.

We’re officially a week out from the 6th Annual Afros & Audio Podcast Festival & I feel comfortable speaking for the collective when I say “A time was had by ALL.” I can say that with comfort & confidence not because of my proximity to Afros & Audio, but because

1. I was there,

2. Folks voluntarily told me as much

3. I ASKED

It’s always challenging for me to put into words how Afros & Audio leaves me feeling each year, because as my peers used to say “What’s understood doesn’t need to be explained.” I’m going to try for those that don’t understand, to explain.

For years now I’ve referred to it as the Black Podcasters’ Family Reunion. I say that because family is supposed to make you feel safe; and with the attendees, vendors & presenters at Afros & Audio I DO!

I sat in on several sessions where the presenters shared their vulnerabilities in this business space without being performative. If you’ve attended enough sessions and taken enough courses, you can sense when people are performing authenticity. We don’t do that here. The attendees were also raw with their questions, comments and expectations.

Sharing their experiences with panelists hoping to get some insight on how not to make the same missteps that gave them unfavorable results. And what to ask when they get in the right rooms to make sure they are fully able to maximize opportunities as opposed to being taken advantage of in them.

I went to a session moderated by Vena of Konfession Korner and she took the time to curate the physical space and make the session her own. From showing up with candles to create a vibe for those in attendance, to giving gifts to the panelists she worked with, it was put together with LOVE.

The session was about creating community, engaging audiences and building connections and she illustrated that, by having audience members participate in an icebreaker where a ball of yarn was passed back & forth as the volunteers shared instances where they needed community, or their community showed up for them. At the end, the yarn was a visual representation of how we’re all connected.

I sat in on a session with AIR Media (AIR stands for Association of Independents in Radio), where they encouraged us to become members of course, but the presentation wasn’t rooted in recruiting, it was rooted in sharing resources to push the community forward for freelancers in audio.

They even had us complete a survey at the end that not only informed us of what resources they have available but gave us the opportunity to let them know whether or not we would use them. That let me know they care about creating resources, that meet the needs of their members & potential members and adjusting to meet those needs.

I got the feedback that we could use more hands-on sessions, and I agree, so I hope community members out there reading this know that if you have a fear of public speaking but excel in leading by example, please think of the skills you could leverage to share with this community next go round. That being said, if you come to learn, you will do that, but we also PARTIED HARD!

For the first time, Afros & Audio was a three-day festival. On night one, in addition to our usual kick-off party, Afros & Audio founder, Talib Jasir put on a live show, which I heard was amazing, followed by a game night. When I walked in folks were playing SPADES!

New bonds were made, and I really appreciate everyone who participated in playing Lyrically Correct that night, the game has been collecting dust in my bag all year and I had so much fun.

On night two, we witnessed collaboration in action during the presentation honoring three industry legends, , TK Dutes, & Krystal Hill. When I say the emotions in that room tapped through my spirit.

From TK tying in how the first person to give her radio time was also acknowledged at a recent Stevie Wonder concert she attended, to Krystal starting off her speech giving thanks to her grandmother, and BlkPodNews.com’s own , who accepted Twila’s award in Twila’s absence refusing to touch said award. We felt all the feels!

Directly following the awards ceremony, did his thang on the turntables to keep everyone dancing so hard we had to add an hour onto our time at the venue. The Podcastic team tried to teach me to hustle, I was almost there but one too many spins coupled with Al switching the tempo on us had me tapped out!

Something I think rarely gets mentioned about Afros & Audio is its international appeal. At the 4th Annual Conference in Philly, I met podcasters from Canada. Last year at the 5th Annual Conference, we had a Main Stage session titled “The British Are Coming” where Black Podcasters from the UK came to share about their place in the podcast industry.

This year we’ve had podcasters come from Switzerland to be present. And I caught pieces of the Voices of the African Diaspora: Telling Our Stories Through Podcasting, which was moderated by community member Sambaza, and featured panelists with roots across the continent and experiences across the world.

One snippet I heard was Paula of the Talk Shit With P podcast sharing how she called her Tanzanian father to tell him she was going to be getting vulnerable on her show and he told her “It’s ok, I’m depressed too.” and gave her permission to talk about things generally considered taboo in the Global Black Community.

Listen, we could be here for another week just with me trying to capture in words an experience that must be felt. I heard so many of you tell Talib what you’ll do for year 7, sponsoring students, a charging station, funding.

While Shannon Sharpe fell short with his widely-discussed Club Shay Shay, he didn’t leave empty-handed. With his co-host Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, the duo clinched Best Sports Podcast award for their show Nightcap. In a surprising turn, Oprah was notably absent from the winners’ list, missing out on Best Culture Podcast, Best Limited Series Podcast, and Best Solo Host.

Anna DeShawn’s Queer News maintained its winning streak, claiming Best LGBTQ Podcast for the third consecutive year. Meanwhile, podcasting veteran Lisa Woolfork and her hit show Stitch Please took home three new trophies, bringing her right behind DeShawn’s record for podcast with the most BPAwards wins.

Other winners include Vivan Acquah’s alluring Cooking Back to Our Roots from the Netherlands, the chuckles-inducing Vaguely Nerdy from brother-sister duo Cheryl and Jae Williams, and the captivating TwentyOne 21: A Black AF Scripted Audio Comedy.

In a fitting tribute, Keisha “TK” Dutes, Krystal Hill, and Twila Dang, the three Legend Award recipients, will be honored in person at the upcoming Afros & Audio Podcast Festival in Baltimore, MD, October 18–20, 2024.

In addition to Legend Award winners, VIP Voters decided on some of the night's most prestigious categories, including Best Hosting Duo, Best Solo Host, Best Sound Design, and the coveted Podcaster of the Year title. As the largest awards program exclusively celebrating Black podcasters worldwide, BPAwards draws talent from across the globe. This year’s panel of judges includes Narratives of Purpose host Claire Murigande from Switzerland, Answers for Gen Z's Osakpolor Aiguobasinmwin from Nigeria, and the voice behind Drea's Point of View from California.

“People love our awards because we’re inclusive. We embrace a whole range—from the hobbyist recording in a small neighborhood studio to our 2021 winner recording in her clothes closet, all the way up to global icons like Oprah,” says Co-Founder and Executive Director Demetrius Bagley.

The fifth annual awards ceremony, hosted by Medium Popcorn's Justin Brown, will stream from Gifted Sounds Network NYC studio. The event streams live on the Black Pod Awards’ YouTube channel on Sunday, September 22, at 2 PM Eastern. The show will feature performances by musical talents TIYI and Veana Marie. Vanessa Tyler might be one of the best storytellers in our community. And she has an Emmy to back it up. Her award-winning journalism has brought untold stories from the Black community to TV viewers and radio listeners around the country and now, she’s teamed up with the Black Information Network to bring a new podcast about our stories to the audio world. It’s called ‘Black Land’.

The Black Land podcast taps into the lives of ordinary people and brings to life their extraordinary tales of triumph and circumstance. Each week, Vanessa Tyler dives deep into uncharted stories and gives an overdue and deserving voice to those who have often experienced the other side of the American dream.

Recently, I sat down with Tyler to learn more about her story, what this podcast means for the Black community, and what it’s like being in podcasting vs TV & radio.

“I couldn’t think of what else I would do if I wasn’t doing news, interviewing people, or producing stories.” Vanessa Tyler knew she wanted to be on television since she was 11. What started as a love for writing and a dream to be a news reporter took her from winning essay contests in elementary school to winning an Emmy award. Her work has received several nominations, but the story that won the award was a piece about a family that was traveling the country to help families understand how drug use is actively harming our communities. 

With the launch of the Black Land podcast, Vanessa is taking her artful journalism to tell the stories of people from the past and present who have gone from struggle to triumph. The very first episode features a story of how HIV advocacy and education have helped many people learn about preventative measures you can take, but there are still many Black women who are only learning about the disease after contracting it. “A lot of people probably think HIV, like Covid, has just gone away. You know, people don’t realize it’s still a thing”.

Vanessa also shares that she brought on a guest with a triumphant family legacy. Listeners get to hear the story of 19-year-old Adolphus Stroud, a Black man who was denied funding and transportation preventing him from making the 2000-mile trip to compete in the 1927 Olympic Trials. Stroud’s descendant Frank Shines tells the story of how what happened next became a pivotal moment in his family legacy and how his relative made it to Harvard Stadium to compete in the 5K race despite the odds stacked against him.

Their decision to strike was a stand for dignity, fair pay, and safe working conditions - basic human rights that were blatantly disregarded.

Who is Patrina Dixon??

Patrina Dixon is a Certified Financial Education Instructor, Registered Financial Consultant, Two Time #1 Best Selling Author and Speaker. She is a proud One Hundred Women of Color alumni.

As Founder and CEO of It’$ My Money, Patrina and her team are on a mission to help people transform their lives by mastering money management skills. You can find her award nominated content on her blog and social pages.

Patrina has been featured in Black Enterprise, Yahoo Finance, Real Simple, and Fox61. She is the star and executive producer of her very own local CT TV show entitled It'$ My Money.

Patrina has taught personal finance workshops in high schools, colleges, universities, businesses, prisons, detention homes, events, from Rhode Island to New York to Texas and tons of states in between and even as far as Trinidad and Tobago.

She attended the University of Hartford’s Barney School of Business, holds a Financial Management as well as a Women in Business certificate from Cornell University. She also graduated from Goldman Sachs One Hundred Black Women | Black in Business Program. Her most notable role is that of a wife and mom.

Why did you become a Personal Finance Coach?

Years ago, while working in corporate america, I was on a mission to climb the ladder, make more money each year. I accomplished this goal, but still was living the paycheck to paycheck cycle.

Getting paid, spending, regretting the spending and did it over and over again every two weeks.

Then one day I decided I wanted something different.

I began learning how to think about money differently, how to use and spend it differently. I learned strategies to help along the way with one of the most important learned lessons: executing on what I learned.

After achieving personal success with my finances, I wanted to do my part to ensure everyone learned the same.

This desire led me to the coaching path.

What motivated you to start your podcast, The Money Exchange?

My goal was to do all I can to reach as many people as possible with financial information that can help them along their financial journeys.

With so many people listening to podcasts and being a fan of podcasts myself, I realized that this would be a great medium to deliver financial education to people who may not have to the opportunities to receive it otherwise.

I also wanted The Money Exchange to be used as a tool of empowerment for audiences through conversations about people who are doing things and succeeding, that way they can learn and be inspired to accomplish their goals.

What are the goals the Money Exchange Podcast for 2024?

To continue to have fun. I love podcasting.

I love having authentic conversations with my guests and also enjoying the solo episodes as well. When I first starting doing solo episodes it was a little weird as I had only done my show interview style.

My solo episodes very often rank in the top listened episodes.

You can check out the most recent solo episode here This specific solo episode gives a recap of 2023 podcast and a sneak peak into goals for 2024 for the show + a bonus recap of the Goldman Sachs, One Million Black Women | Black in Business Program I graduated from.

I also have decided to record the show on a new platform as opposed to zoom and I would love to have the show sponsored.

Your financial education company has been around for sometime, do you have a focus area or target audience for 2024?

Yes. My company was established in 2016 and continues to grow.

In 2024 we plan to continue growth efforts with a focus on scaling. The brand It’$ My Money has made great traction in the personal finance space. The brand also includes a weekly blog and weekly newsletter which are other ways Patrina provides financial content to the It’$ My Money community.

Our focus for our financial workshops and speaking engagements are in colleges, businesses and non-profit organizations who serves youth or women.

We have a goal to impact many, many lives with money management skills and a path to wealth building. A sweet spot for these sessions are students in the 11th grade and above. My team and I are focusing on increasing our network within these areas.

What are things you would attribute to the success of your podcast and business?

My team. I have always had great people who work on the It”$ My Money team. Each of them play vital roles the success of both the podcast and business.

I have an operation manager for the podcast and I have people on the content side for the podcast and business including social media, and an assistant that helps with administrative side of things. There is also another financial facilitator who does workshops.

Also for the podcast, the consistency in posting the episodes which is the 1st and 3rd of every month and asking the guest to promote the episodes and providing them with assets to make it easy for them to do so. We have also started requesting them as collaborators on The Money Exchange podcast instagram account and that has helped as well.They also began using the video portion of the podcast for It’$ My Money with Patrina Dixon YouTube channel

For the business, knowing and better understanding the personas of the potential clients, connecting more with them online as well as in person and doing more research on the potential clients to ensure our proposals align to their missions and goals for a given year or quarter.  

If you had to name one highlight of 2023 for your podcast or business, what would that be?

This is a hard one as I truly enjoy all the work I do.

If I had to name one highlight, I guess it would be the fact that I advocated, for 4 and a half years, with the state senator of CT to pass legislation to have a requirement for high school students to take a full semester, half credit course in personal finance and in June of 2023 the bill was signed.

Now every high school student in the state of CT has access to a personal finance course and must take it before graduating. Receiving the invitation from the Governor to be an attendee for the signing of that bill was an amazing day.

• someone who is a small business owner and has tips on how they raised capital for their business

What’s good fellow Podcasters!!

Last week, BlkPodNews sent me out to On Air Fest Annex: a bi-coastal, bi-annual festival shaping podcasting's cultural calendar that features immersive experiences, awards, a business summit, an audio art residency, and more!

Experiencing this conference firsthand was nothing short of amazing—the venue, the people, the audio, and the visual experiences were incredibly engaging, and there are 3 huge takeaways I want to share with you…

Takeaway #1:

🎬 My Passion for Post-Production has been Re-Ignited 

The event opened with a live taping of Lost Notes, a show co-hosted by Novena Carmel and Michael Barnes, and it was truly an immersive experience. 

As the hosts explored different periods throughout music history, the music being referenced would start to play. The same applied for video too! At different points throughout their set, the lights in the auditorium would dim and the screen behind the hosts showed the most amazing places where these dances originated and the time periods from which the music was born.

Novena and Michael’s passion for in-depth storytelling infused with interactive media was so captivating, and it reminded me what can happen when we decide to add that extra 30 minutes improving our storyline or making that extra edit that makes your episode just a little better. 

Takeaway #2:

🎤 The Emergence of Music in the World of Podcasting

As a content creator who loves TikTok and is a passionate music fan, a big highlight for me at On Air Fest was Jason Derulo. 

J-J-J-Jason Derulo!! 

Recently, Jason has been working on a podcast called Underwater: a romantic thriller in partnership with Warner Music’s Interval Presents. In addition to hearing from Jason himself, we also heard a few snippets from his podcast. 

The thing I loved most about Jason’s podcast was it included both an engaging fictional story and original music specifically made for the podcast. Synthesizing the two, the quality was not only engaging, but it was extremely well produced. 

As someone that loves both music and stories, I’ve always wondered why more artists don’t create podcasts to accompany their projects! Could you imagine if our most memorable albums also had a podcast season? Think about Kendrick Lamar’s “good kid m.A.A.d city,” an album that already had quite a bit of audio acting, or Jay Z’s album “4:44”, a project that tells a nuanced story about Jay’s new perspective on life as he grows older. 

This is definitely something I hope we’ll see more of in the future. I’ve always known this was possible, but it wasn’t until I was listening to Jason on stage that I realized how innovative his podcast concept was. 

Takeaway #3:

📚 Storytelling is Everything

I’ll be honest, one thing you may not know about me is that I actually don’t enjoy I’ll be honest, one thing you may not know about me is that I actually don’t enjoy scary stories. I am NOT the person that casually listens to horror podcasts! So you can imagine my surprise when I found out Glynn Washington was going to be doing a live taping of Spooked. 

Normally, I would have found another set to explore, but there was no way I was going to miss listening to Glynn Washington. 

Glynn told a true-life supernatural tale, and I was on the edge of my seat for the entire 25 minutes. It was like a masterclass on how to hold people's attention through storytelling: we were all on edge, we all laughed at his well-timed jokes, and we all felt the sense of fear referenced at each of the most critical parts of the story. 

In the middle of Glynn’s set, I kept wondering: “Why is this so engaging?” 

I think the biggest reason was his ability to make each part of the story personal—he made you care. From the start of the story when he hooked the audience with a story about his family, Glynn kept me invested on what was going to happen next as he weaved a narrative thread from start to finish.

In a world that’s becoming so algorithmic, it was a great reminder that storytelling is more than enough to single-handedly keep your listeners engaged from the beginning of the episode to the end. I’m not negating the value of marketing and promotion, but Glynn Washington’s set taught me that I need to pay more attention to the art of storytelling.

Final Thoughts

Our craft is ever-evolving, and there is always something new to learn, a different perspective to consider. Whether you're behind the mic or in front of it, remember that at the heart of every great podcast is a story waiting to be told with passion, creativity, and authenticity. 

The world of podcasting is vast and varied, and as my experience at On Air Fest Annex shows, there's always room for innovation, improvement, and inspiration. My time at this conference was incredibly transformative, and I highly encourage you to attend someday.
